I'd say so. There's nothing like playing with and against real people.
Two things stand out - first, real people are far cleverer and more
inventive than any AI. And second is the embarrassment factor - if you
lose out to a pre-programmed AI, well, you just reload and try again
until you get it right. But if a human outsmarts you there's no second
try - and you know someone somewhere is sitting there feeling pleased
with themselves. It brings a different level of tension.
And then there is all the co-operative stuff, joining with other people
to create things or to fight wars. I started playing a MMORPG about
three years ago and since then I have bought exactly one [1] standalone
game - that was Civ 4 and I didn't really play it for long. It's saved
me money, too, the subs are less than I would spend each month on new
games. So I am one of the "missing" PC gamers, though I am spending more
time than ever playing games on my PC.

I wouldn't have it any other way. I just haven't tried MMOGs.

And when you dupe an opponent. Like while playing Warcraft II, you
do the Barracks-in-the-Mine trick. Like while playing Total
Annihilation, you pick up the enemy commander with a light
transport. And you can't stop laughing.

Hi Brad,
I beg to defer - if you look at the number of AAA strategy releases in
the past year, its pretty pathetic - mostly expansions and updates.
The new titles might be quality - but there is something to be said
for quantity - hard to be innovative when there are only a few major
titles each year.

On reflection - I'll retract some of what I just said in the previous
post. Strategy ain't dying, but its place in the market sure is
curious. Civilization style titles do well, RTS's still do well. But
most of the strategy titles coming out are from indepent producers
such as yourself, or Paradox.

To use a baseball metaphor, apparently big publishers would rather go
for a home run in the console space, then hit a single or double in
the computer world - even if its pretty much a sure thing you'll get
decent sales in the computer market. Guess the pressure for profit
means making a million bucks isn't worth it anymore...

I do not think it has anything to do with PC games.

1) People now use Forums for their specific games. Gamespot, Gamespy,
IGN, and all major game sites have general and specific game forums.
2) No moderators and more spam

If you look at the game forums, they are huge. For example, go over to
Relic boards and see how many people are active for Company of Heroes
and Warhammer Dawn of War. Or go over to agecommunity.com and see all
the activity for Age of Empires...same thing with Command and Conquer,
Supreme Commander...etc.
