I don't beleive turn-based will ever die. Sure less games
are getting produced that are turn based these days but I
wouldn't be suprised to see a revival.
These are still plenty of us out here looking for good turn
based games.

Civilization 4, Heroes of Might and Magic 5, Fantasy Wars, Dominions 3
and Galactic Civilizations 2 would beg to differ.
And that is leaving niche/indy efforts out of the equation.
I think that most of the discussions have moved to company (ie title
specific) boards or other gaming webforums.
OTOH the wargaming group (comp.sys.ibm.pc.games.war-historical) which
split off from csipgs is now doing better than its parent!

Ha. You should have been around in '93-4 before csipg was split into all the
subgroups. *That* rocked.

That is like 2 A-list titles a year, if that? You think that is thriving?

Two big budget (just from the top of my head, mind you) titles plus a
host of niche/indy (ie mid and low budget) games means TBS is hardly
dead and buried.
Just looking at the historical wargames gives me *at least* a dozen
titles over 2007.
The genre is not thriving in the way that it used to do in the late
90s and which FPS and RTS are doing now, but it is doing quite well in
a subdued (non triple A) way.

Bah. People have been saying that for years. It may be true that the
big honkin' budget titles are more and more moving to consoles (I'd
have to see some data before I believed it, though), but as the
budgets for A-list titles continue to grow (tens of millions of
dollars per title *before* advertising), smaller independent studios
will still be able to make games for PC. Remember: PC games don't
have to be approved by a console company before being published.
Despite the hype, no console looks better than a gaming PC made in the
same year, and they rapidly fall behind. At the very least, that
means that the best FPS games will always be on PC, and good strategy
games will never work on a gamepad. Not to mention how sucky gamepads
are for FPS games.
