I was just looking through IPDB looking at a pin that has been offered
to me for sale. The search returned a bunch of games and I was paging
through them when I stumbled across a pretty odd name for a game,
leading me to this topic that I thought would be interesting. Yes,
it's a slow day at the office.

Sexy Girl, yes, I get that one. Dancing Lady, OK, fine. Monster Bash,
works on many levels.

On Beam. What the hell is that? Unless someone can explain the logic
to me, I nominate 'On Beam' for the all time odd pinball name list.
What's your nominee?

There was a cool colecovision game called Beam Rider... When I first
saw the name "On Beam" I though it would have a gymnastics theme.

BTW, I would love to have a Sexy Girl in my collection! Anyone selling
one?

Sahara Love (pinball meets harlequin romance... one conversion that
makes me say WTF!?!?!)

Tri-Zone (Messersmith and I spent too much time from our lives trying
to figure out last week, "What is a Tri-Zone? Where is it? Is it the
next level of sexuality in space?"

I think the oddest one is...

"Pinball" by Stern.

How less creative can you get?!

It's like a car named "Car". Oh wait a minute... the French did that
with "Le Car"!

The girl on the BG is Brooke Shields, and I recall her making a movie
called Sahara way back when. On a related note, see Jungle Queen, with
the Michael Douglas/Kathleen Turner (when she was hot) BG, clearly
inspired by Romancing the Stone and a conversion of Sinbad as well.
Maybe there was a European market for converting games using images
ripped off from American movies.

You just weren't born early enough. It's an aviation term. Being 'On
Beam' means that you are following a VOR signal and you are on the
published vector for that radio 'beam' Also: "Flying the Beam". There
was actually a board game with a similar title.

Modern aviation was still pretty new in the 1950's and 1960's with lots
of inventions helping pilot's find their way in bad weather being
developed during that time after WWII. This was just one of those many
terms born of that era that found it's way into this 1960's space
themed pinball. On Beam would have sounded really cool in 1968.

Laser beams were really groovy, too.

It's the bee's knees, man! Quite a Lalapalozza!

Movies that had sound were first called 'Talkies'

Makes sense, but were there "struggle buggies" in 1953? The name
sounds alliterative and probably made up, but maybe racers were
actually called that during the Eisenhower era.

How about "Mini Zag":

I played this game at the PHOF in Vegas, and it was interesting, but I
don't quite know what to make of the name.....

Barracora's gotta be up there with the strange names. God knows what
they were on when they came up with the theme and graphics - though I'm
very glad they did!
