I found a "Dagger of Throwing" in my most recent game of Stone Soup
0.3.4. According to the description, it was supposed to return to me
after I threw it. However, it didn't; it just went where I threw it
until i got around to picking it up, like any normal dagger. Was I
doing something wrong, or is this a bug?

Perhaps I should add another odd report here. I got the following
message today:

The orc wizard casts a spell.
Your Dodging skill increases to level 2!
The magic dart hits you!

I thought that magic dart was undodgeable...maybe I'm wrong. Can you
change dodging on undodgeable spells?

Dodging is trained when it *fails* (i.e. when you get hit), and Magic
Dart is only undodgeable because it's impossible to get enough EV to
dodge it rather than because it has some magic "this never misses" flag.
If you had EV 1500 (absolutely impossible), you could dodge a magic
dart.

(For reference, the highest possible effective EV against ranged
attacks with DMsl running is in the 300-500 range.)

To get back to the original question:

I believe the returning part is dependent on the throwing skill. At
least that's what I remember.

After reading this post I found a weapon of throwing for the first
time on level 2.

The gobin had a spear of throwing and threw it at me and returned 5/5
throws.

Once I aquired it I was getting around 60-70% percent returns not
really dependant on a hit or not. I died before I could back up these
figures.

My throwing was a level 2 and my character was a level 2 minotaur.

Hmm. Seems like a bit of a useless ego item then, at least compared to
its' brethren. :>

Thanks for the information.

"dagger of returning", not "of throwing", just for reference.

Yep. From throw_it() in item_use.cc:

returning = (get_weapon_brand(item) == SPWPN_RETURNING && !teleport &&
!one_chance_in(1 + skill_bump(SK_THROWING)));

This works out (if I read skill_bump() correctly) to a 1/1, 1/3, 1/5,
1/7, 1/8, 1/9, ... chance of the weapon failing to return for Throwing
skill levels of 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, ..., capping out at a 1/31 chance of
failure for level 27 Throwing. Monsters similarly have a 1/(HD+3)
chance of their weapons of returning failing to live up to their name.
