First question: I know something about the Victorian era and books by HG Wells,
but what exactly *is* steampunk? I have never heard that term anywhere else.

I have also never played a skill-based *band before. I read some of the in game
help and I'm starting playing a sidhe rogue. Any general advice on what to put
skill points into would be cool.

I'm using mostly throwing daggers and martial arts for fighting. I found a
throwing hatchet, but when I throw it it only goes 1 space, why?

Steampunk is a punk aesthetic set in a Victorian era (though Steamband also has
pulp influences) that hypotheses a future that happened early using the modern
science of the 19th century. Airships, ray guns, binding ether, steam powered
vehicles and computers, vacuum based electronics. There's more but I just got
back from vacation and I'm tired. Google Steampunk and you'll find more than you
ever wanted to know.

My suggestion would be following a specific path - don't spread the points out
too much. Stealth is important for rogues. If you get your stealth to 20, and
have access to the dragon claw martial arts skill, you will learn ninja skills.

It's too heavy. Your Muscle and Agility rise every level (with the statgain
points you get on the skill screen), and soon you'll be able to throw that
hatchet much further.

I have been playing around with rogue for the last few days and can
offer you some of my observations; though I've not made it incredibly
far with this class (I've won with an Adventurer and died very
stupidly at DL 3 with a Dashing Hussar, as well as several mid 10's
with gadgeteers and Dashing Hussars).

Also, I should note that I am .40 since -as of a few days ago- there
is not yet a Mac release of .41.

In my experience the strength of the rogue is in stealth. I always
keep that pumped up and it opens up some very nice skills. My early
strategy has involved pumping up stealth and assassination and going
after prime victims like Infernal Trogdolytes (good drops!) which can
be killed in a single attack with a relatively low swords skill if
they are sleeping. It is a somewhat risky strategy -watch out for the
witch doctors!- so keep *tons* of escape and healing on hand! Don't
be afraid to bail out of a level -even a quest level- when things get
hairy! Steamband can turn from good to dead in very quick order.

I've also been increasing my thrown skills and my gadgeteer as the
rogues that I've played have all been way to wimpy to kill anything at
early levels (!viva Spring Blade on DL 50!) gadgeteer provides some
very nice utility functions -such as detection- and only needs to be
pumped up a bit to give you early access to what you will need from
the Utility Belt (I don't think that it is worthwhile going after the
more expensive functions -yet).

I hope these observations help! Steamband is a very fun variant that
I have had a terrific time playing (thanks maintainers!).

You are safe to rest if your WP are high. Unless you have
regeneration you need to drink the tonic to recover WP. And DON'T
walk around with low WP. Even if your HP are at 100%, drink the
tonic. (In the very early game, I don't like letting WP go down by
more than 2 or 3, unless I know that I am about to gain a level with
an easy kill.)

I don't remember the details, but what wound points do is reduce the
chance of insta-death from breath damage & magical attacks. Just
don't treat them like HP; they are NOT linear.

more questions:

What does "you gain some insight" from putting books in the library do?

Why is there separate hit points and wound points? What causes damage to wound
points? (is it critical hits from monsters?)

Is the cut/stun counter invisible? 'cause I keep dying from wounds when it
doesn't say I have a cut. If I'm low on hps how do I know if it's safe just to
rest to heal or if I have to drink a healing tonic?

Communicates the fact that you just acquired skill points.

> Why is there separate hit points and wound points? What causes damage to wound

This is covered in the FAQ contained in the on-line help.

Wound points are your health. Hit points are your ability to avoid taking actual
damage to your wound points. They are split, because now there is a resource
that cannot be recovered simply by resting away from monsters.

Damage to wound points has a possibility to happen any time you take damage from
any source. The lower your hit points are, the greater the chance you will take
damage to your wound points.

> Is the cut/stun counter invisible? 'cause I keep dying from wounds when it
> doesn't say I have a cut. If I'm low on hps how do I know if it's safe just to

The cut/stun counter is *not* invisible. But, if you have low hit points and
wound points, you may take damage from being hurt. The lower your wound points
and hit points are the greater a chance you will take damage. You will *not*
take this damage if you are resting. So when wounded it is generally safe to
rest to get full hit points to reduce the chance of your wounds breaking open or
bleeding. If your current wound points + hit points is 50% or less of your total
wound points + hit points, there is a high likelihood of you taking damage from
wounds breaking open.

Being cut and poisoned works the same way as in other bands - you take turn
after turn of damage to your hit points, when this occurs you have a chance to
take that damage to your wound points as normal.
