Could I disable it? I want to do it manually so that it would not hang
itself when auto-update failed....

Yep, don't start Steam

I have yet to see autoupdate fail on our three PC's in the famiily
Or rather it have failed but this has been caused by events out of
Valves control and is usually sorted asap
Eg Katrina (or was it another storm?), Vista etc

What kind of connection to the internet do you have?

From what you write it looks like there's heavy packet loss on your
internet connection
By "kind of connection" I meant speed download/upload - good and
steady upload speed is important

Do your ISP have a speed tester?
Otherwise you can try eg Speekeasy's test tool
http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/

From the office (Denmark) to Seattle, WA I get these numbers (2Mb
direct connect)

Download Speed: 1926 kbps (240.8 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1885 kbps (235.6 KB/sec transfer rate)

Obviously your speed from home to the ISP sets the limit
But the speed from your ISP to the internet backbone is very important
as heavy load on this connection can make your own connection less
usable than expected

Valves content servers are located in centers which have connections
to the internet with an extreme speed
Eg the server in Denmark has a peak of 15Mbit in used bandwidth

You migth also want to check your local content server
http://steampowered.com/v/index.php?area=content_stats

The bandwidth used by content servers are only for updating steam and
various games
Content servers are usually on a different net/internet connection

Active online players connects to the authentication - , VAC - and
gaming servers (not content)

Just an average cable connection (not DSL). Yesterday night, all
attempts to update failed (sometimes 40%, sometimes 80%).

Thanks. Maybe there are too many TF2 players... I think I would try to
update again later.

Thanks. I still think Steam should not force an update during start-up.

It doesn't if you set your games not to update and use offline mode.

Just is case, If you have a cable connection with a coax connection, (small
round connector) check to make sure the connections are tight. I had serious
network issues (dropped packets and intermittent connections) when the cable
that connected the Cable modem to the street came loose. Was s bugger to
track down, I was convinced the internet connection from Time Warner cable
was faulty. When I got the cable tight to the cable modem, all my network
problems vanished. This is an easy problem to overlook since you will have
connection when you go to connect to web.
Hope this helps,
