I'm trying the demo and I can't seem to control the ship. I am
doing the training missions and I have it set up for Arcade
mode. I don't want to use a joystick and I would prefer to use
my mouse like in Freelancer. I tried disabling the joystick and
using the mouse but I couldn't seem to get it to work.

At one point my throttle went to 0 and I was unable to get
it going again (using A and Z and Shift A and Shift Z). Is there
a newer demo available? I was hoping for the sort of brain
dead controls as in Freelancer and Wing Commander. I just
don't have a lot of time or patience to figure out a lot of details. I
just want to sit down and shoot at stuff for a bit.

You should be able to toggle mouse steering on and off
by pressing the ~ key (the one right above the TAB key
on most keyboards). Note that you have your choice of
mouse steering styles; virtual joystick is the most similar
to Freelancer, but the default is "mouse-look," which is
similar to a typical FPS game.

Please let me know if you can't get this to work. You
can respond here, or email me directly -

Well, Starshatter is never *quite* as brain-dead as Free-
lancer or Wing Commander, but you can get pretty close.
The newest demo is 3.9.0 which was released earlier this
spring.

Ok, the mouse toggle does work. The thing is that when you
go to the control screen and then come back you have to hit
the toggle key again. The throttle for the mouse scroll button
doesn't seem to work but I was able to use the A and Z keys
for that. I think the mouse scroll throttle doesn't work.

I was able to get everything else to work with the mouse as
the control. I couldn't figure out how to do rolls. I think with
Freelancer you would hold another key down which would allow
you to turn with a roll.

At first I had trouble working the other controls until I realized that
I need to use the mouse control toggle if I need to point and
click. I was getting the hang of things a bit but I need to spend
more time. I completed the first mission but I crashed trying
to land. I had a first person view and I was lined up fine and then
it switched to a third-person view and I had a hard time controlling.
One little movement with the mouse control was enough to get
the craft pointing towards the ceiling. A little move down and it was
pointing nose down. It didn't seem like I had any fine tune control
to make the landing. I'll have to try again.

Looks interesting though and runs fine on my older machine. The
wingman made a few kills and I knocked off a couple of drones.
The combat portion seems pretty cool. I wish there could be
more sound though. When I turn my engines off it is dead quiet.
Obviously there is no sound in space but just some chatter from the
radio or maybe some humming of my equipment would have been
nice.
