Hi. I'm playing in my first game as the Borg (and I've only played
about 70 turns of VGAP at all). I'm trying to figure out if it's
worthwhile or even helpful to build a VERY early second starbase.
It's turn 1. Homeworlds started with $15,000 (pretty important);
30,000 clans.
One of my four starting planets (all within range of my homeworld) is
a Humanoid Participatory with 80,000 clans(so there's some money
there). The planet has decent but not top notch minerals, all
densities are at least 32%:
1100 N
500 T
2400 D
400 M
The planet will be assimilated on turn 7. I could definitely build a
starbase here if I pumped out an LDSF from my homeworld around turn
4-5, taking advantage of the Humanoids for the tech 10 hulls.
Is that even a good idea? The starbases would be right on top of each
other, less than 81LY. But I'd be able to produce probes, at least,
from both my homeworld and this new world from a very early stage. I
could even build a turn 1 LDSF, move it turn 2, construct the starbase
on turn 3, and be pumping out two probes a turn starting on turn 4.
But it seems likely I'd end up with mineral issues (possibly including
fuel issues) later trying to supply both starbases (probably each
would get to create 7-10 probes before I had to think about it real
hard, depending on whether or not I sidetrack for any other ships),
and I'd have to sink a lot of money into the new starbase for Engine
technology if nothing else. On the other hand, it's $4500 closer to
making Annihilations. (I'd be putting money into the homeworld base
just to get level 6 hulls for the LDSF, but that lets me make
Fireclouds someday also, so it doesn't seem like a bad thing.)
I am playing with complete strangers. I have no idea how to predict
what this might do with respect to diplomacy.
Thoughts? I really don't know if it's mostly just awesome to get a
second starbase up that early, or totally ridiculous to build my
second starbase within 81LY of my first one, or if this could really
go either way and is at least an interesting gambit to try in my first
Borg game.
