Post subject: Star Wars Galaxies questions....
Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>games>rpg (more info?)

I tried the game quite a while ago and couldn't really get into it at
the time. (I was spending a lot of time on EVE)

Now I'm thinking of having another look and had a few questions.

1: Have the graphics changed much since the original release? I
remember being unimpressed with the graphics compared to most FPS
games back then.

2: Back then if you didn't join a faction PVP was by consent only. Is
it still like that? Is the death penalty still low as it was then?

3: When I played you could get a swoop bike for about 20k and earn the
money for it in under a week. Is that still doable or is it much more
expensive now?

4: I understand you can now start as a jedi. I assume this means that
half the galaxy are now jedi. Other than waving a lightsaber, is there
any point in being a jedi character?
I was thinking of either a bounty hunter or smuggler character. Any
comments on them?
If I do start as a smuggler, what do I do untill I get a ship? Walk
around with my pockets full of contraband?

5: I like the idea of being able to own my own ship. Particularly the
multi crew ships. How are the ships integrated into the game. Can you
simply board your ship and take off and fly to other systems or is
there more to it than that?
Can you fly with a mouse and keyboard or do you need to use a
joystick?
Do you need to worry about getting blown up every time you take off
like in EVE or are you fairly safe most of the time?

What happens if your ship is destroyed? Do you lose everything aboard?
Do you need to re-purchase the ship? Or do you just respawn on the
planet you took off from?

I've checked out the web site ship guide and the YT 1300 seems to be
the only multi-passenger ship that you can simply purchase. The others
look like they require you to do a series of quests or join a faction.
How much do they generally cost and how long would it take to get the
piloting skill to fly one. (starting with a fresh character)

How long does it take to get into a light fighter? Cost and skill
training?

Assuming I decide to join a faction at some later point, how are
faction ships aquired? Do you complete a series of missions to get
them or do you purchase them for credits?

6: The game consists of multiple servers. How do you decide which one
to start your character on? Can you later transfer to a different one
or do you need to make a new character? Can you have more than one
character per account? More than one per server?

Any websites that might have more detailed info I should visit?
Thanks for any info you can offer. :^)

Isn't the combat shooter game style now, like a FPS game? How is that
a ripoff of WoW?

Oh man, they are going to try to relaunch and remarket the game? That
will be difficult.

So it's that bad right now ey? Always wanted to take a sneak peek, but
Evercrack or World of Wallies with a SW trannie dress thrown over the
top just didn't grab me. <G>
Is it at least soloable and/or casual player friendly now? When does
Sony's (the company I despise almost as much as Buzzard) license expire?

Where did this info surface?

Bioware is the developer and the new one will be based on Knights of the
Old Republic (same time frame).

Don't bother. They went from ridiculously easy (NGE) to ridiculously
hard (the latest update). Unless you want to group for EVERYHING, don't
bother. And of course, grouping is extremely difficult since nobody is
there anymore.

I think he was refering to the fact that they had shoehorned levels, classes
and quests into the game.

SWG isn't that bad these days. My problem is that everytime I play it I get
great memories back of the pre-cu system where one could do whatever one
wanted. Its these flashbacks that make me realise how much better this game
could actually be.

The only other issue is lack of population. I was in an 85 strong guild.
Post NGE it dropped to 1 or 2, now its up to 4.... Sad

Soon one will be allowed to knock down buildings of players long departed. I
wonder how many of the great player cities will remain?

I still pop into SWG every now and then using my Sony station account, but
the UI is so different and counter-intuitive compared to other MMORPG's that
it puts me off staying.

Yeh I was.

Granted my experience of MMORPGs is limited to SWG, GW, WoW, the beta of
Earth and Beyond, and LotRO. But I thought that SWG had the best level up
system out there. It really let you customize your character. They nerfed
that completely, simplifying some classes and completely removing others.
leaving the game with lots of carbon copies of about 8(?) characters. Also
I used to have a lvl 70 pet Rancor named Harvey. I used him to keep arrogant
Jedis in their places.

Now the social aspect. On the Bria server it was customary to get a bunch of
people together and go hunting on Tatooine. There was a great player made
town called Mos Oasis that always had good missions around it. I used to
play it with my best mate, we actually got a reputation for being good
people to group with, it was cool. Standing outside the cantina in a my
Gunman duster putting a party together.

That got wrecked when they added the extremely poor quest basted play. You
didn't really need to socialize any more because it was easy to solo
everything.

It's been a long time since I played it, but it felt like they'd ripped out
it's soul and replaced it with beta code. Smile

It is like Sony took away our game without even asking us. I'm feeling all
nostalgic now.

They had! The first day of NGE was terrible. Not only were the ideas bad,
but it suffered from uber-lag and everything seemed like it was on speed.
Especially funny to see the walker droids zippy around in a very
uncharacteristic way.

People that never used the previous skills based system don't know what they
were missing. I missed not being able to mine, craft and adventure with just
one character. What made the NGE worse (apart from the fact that Sony didn't
really tell anybody until it was too late) was the fact that they had
segregated the crafting and mining skills into a completely separate class.
In most mmorpg's you can both craft, resource collect and engage in
adventuring, but not in the NGE. Very big mistake.

I still hope that one day we will see pre-cu. People say this isn't possible
because Sony can't create the code base. What a load of bollocks. Every
software organization with a team of more than 4 will use a config
management tool that allows one to baseline their code. It would be a pretty
trivial task to fish out the earlier baseline...
