Archived from groups: comp>sys>ibm>pc>games>action (more info?)

See:

http://www.tomshardware.com/2008/01/24/stalker_clear_sky_to_be_release...xclusiv

See the following comment text in the article:-

"Stalker: Clear Sky is a prequel to Shadow of Chernobyl, and will only
be available for purchase through Steam, eliminating the cost of
retail packaging and shipping"

Not available in retail ? ..... what do you think from Tom's article?

Now read below the actual facts from the Valve News release on
www.steampowered.com

From: www.steampowered.com:-

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky to be Released Digitally as Steam Exclusive
January 24, 2008, 11:38 am - Eric Twelker

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky will be available for digital download
worldwide exclusively on Steam. The official prequel to the Survival
FPS game S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl is currently slated for
simultaneous release on Steam and at retail outlets later this year.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Seems as if the author of the article on Tom's Hardware got a little
carried away and failed to read the Valve announcement properly.

Steam will have exclusive rights only to the DIGITAL distribution of
STALKER: Clear Sky.

Retail sales, advertising and marketing will no doubt still be handled
by THQ. After all, why cut off a PC title from about 3/4 of the
worldwide prospective customers -- those who have no broadband or
pay per Gbyte broadband download rates, or have penalities
on broadband downloads in excess of monthly limits ?

Seems as if the Tom's Hardware editors need to vet their contributors'
articles a little better. Becoming a pretty normal complaint for that
site.

Which means it comes cheaper for the developers but not necessarily for
the consumers.

Not available in retail -> I won't buy it, period. I have nothing
against STEAM, in fact I find it great (I register my retail games in
STEAM and use them over it). But never ever will I buy anything over it.

John put a bit too much space between the miscontstrued Toms Hardware
comment and the reality of it. I initially missed the end of his post,
too... STEAM has online distribution rights, thats all.
I still play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. and if STEAM was the only way to get it, I
would even though I prefer to have boxed copies/physical media of
everything.

That's good to hear.

If I had to buy over STEAM I'd probably just let pass the game (I won't
give them my credit card number, period; besides that not everywhere are
credit cards that common like the US).

Hopefully we will be able to register our retail copy s/n with STEAM
like it was possible with i.e. DMoMM.

Hmmmm... I thought the text of my post was pretty clear, especially in
regard to skipping the gap. A good comprehension test I suppose Sad

Please, please don't let them screw this one up. Hopefully they have nailed
all the bugs from the first game and I'll actually be able to play stealthily
as I wanted to.

I did the STEAM activation of my Prey DVD. My feeling was that if for
some reason I decide to go back in 5 years and feel like playing
through this, I can do it regardless of the state of STEAM.

If I did the install of this DVD now and put in the CD key, are you
saying it wouldn't work? I think it would. (?)
The only thing I really like about STEAM, and the reason I put Prey in
there is the removal of the CD check.

This is optional with the majority of games that are sold both retail
and over STEAM. Of course it's not possible with retail games that
*require* STEAM to work (like the HLČ series).

Benjamin, now playing HLČ Orange Box on the PS3, who is currently at the
end of EP1, thinking that the gamepad just sucks for this game and
surprised that there are moments where the frame rate goes down to
probably only a few fps which results in heavy stuttering. Great new
console world.

Considering that the console graphics hardware is now 2 years behind
PC hardware, cell processor or not, do you find that surprising??

Well, I do find it surprising that the game wasn't made with reduced
details in at least these fps-critical situations to avoid stuttering
(and the stuttering was really heavy. In EP1, there is room flooded with
water, a (closed) door on the one side and a switch that opens the door
on the other side. In the middle there is a segment of a metal walkway
and a electrical distributor who starts spreading sparks after the
switch has been thrown to on. And as soon as these sparks appear the
frame rate goes down to slideshow level). I mean, the gfx is average at
best (HLČ looked much better on my PC then EP1 does on the PS3). Yes,
the gfx hardware is outdated (it was midrange already when it came out),
and the Cell a mediocre general purpose CPU. But I thought that the devs
and the quality control at least goes as far as avoiding stuttering,
even if that is done by reduction of details/effects.

There are games that were fun on consoles (i.e. TimeShift on the Xbox,
or Resistance on the PS3) but Orange Box clearly shows that PC gaming
indeed isn't dead at all.
