Anyone played it? What do you reckon?

For those not in the know, Warhammer 40000 : Squad Command is a turn
based shooter available on various hand held gaming systems. You start
every turn with 8 units (This starts off with scouts, and later includes
marines, preds, termies, land speeders etc) and you generally have to
acomplish a specific mission. (Most common is 'Kill all enemies' but
other varieties such as 'destroy terrain feature X' and 'Get to point Y'
also exist)

Personally I think the game is quite good, there is enough room for
configuration there to keep it interesting (For example scouts can be
armed with a bolter and one of: A sniper rifle, a missile launcher or a
shotgun. Most of the terrain can be destroyed, and most importantly it
is difficult enough to make it worth playing (Although often enough than
not this is acomplished by flooding you with enemies.)

I enjoy the turn based nature of it, I find it better embodies the
nature of the table top game than say Dawn of War. It becomes much more
about strategy than 'Who can build unit X first'.

For anyone who has a Nintendo DS or a Sony PSP it's a nice little
timewaster.

it sounds interesting. nothing would make me more happy than a 40k video
game that actually feels like youre playing 40k.

i thought dawn of war did that, but when i tried, it was nothing more than
warcraft, except dumbed down to the lowest integer.

I have it for the DS. Your good points are right on, various weapons,
destructible terrain, etc. For me, however, the unwieldiness of the
interface, and the horrid DS graphics just drug it down too far.

What we need is a turn based game, with the graphics and polish of
DoW, sporting faithful reproductions of the codex rules for each army,
a character painting and customization system, basically the tabletop
experiance via PC. I'd settle for a kick ass mmorpg though!

here here!

but you could never play a space marine in an mmorpg. in an rpg fashion,
say, like inquisitor, youre pretty much a god. unless your entire mmorpg is
based around space marines.

unfortunately, it would be like WOW on crack. there would be a hundred
factions all of whom are hostile to each other, cant speak, and pvp rampant.
a hundred space marine chapters, eldar, dark eldar, orks, tau, chaos, and
imperial guard. all in one mmorpg.

while i love the idea, i just cant imagine it happening.

I've been testing it on the PSP on and off over the past few months, and
it's one of the few games that might inspire me to get a PSP.
The analog button is used to look to the sides from the pov of the selected
character, and the graphics are pretty slick (fog and smoke fade the
sideview out into the distance).
One of the satisfying moments is when you shoot an area effect weapon (like
the plasma) into the vicinity of a chaos termie and the explosion manages to
reach him and clear a path of fire out for the other marines in your squad.

I haven't played mine much, but it got a lot easier when I figured out
shotguns in this game are the equivalent of a template based
demolisher cannon.

DoW has it's merits too, but I think many serious players of the table
top game were expecting a carbon copy of the table top game.

I remember 'Shadow of the Horned Rat' as being a great (But bastard
hard) warhammer game (WFB now mind, not 40k).

remember what it was called. it wasnt real great and ran shitty but it wasnt
so bad you couldnt enjoy playing it

I've been playing whenever I can borrow my son's DS (which normally means
after he's gone to bed), and it's quite good fun. I've also had a quick go
at 1v1 via download play, but my opponent hadn't played it before so it was
a bit one sided. It'll also hook up to WiFi and allow up to 8 players per
game.

I'm only up to mission 13 so far, trying to survive 25 turns is a bit
awkward with all those chaos termies and bloodletters running around ...

Chaos Gate? Final Libaration? Wink I liked them both.

Most people want a good real time adaptation of a turn based tabletop...
that won't do! WHFB and 40k in real time will always be different from
real gaming.

If they could manage to make it turnbased it would feel more like the
"real thing" but that won't happen because it wouldn't sell.

I liked all 40k, WHFB and Bloodbowl PC games so far. But that's because
I took them as PC games being "coloured" 40k'ish Wink (Or WHFB'ish... or
BB'ish)

So did I. And for those who might not know, CG is 40K, FL is Epic.

I'm not sure if it's still out there, but I once was able to pick up a
set containing Chaos Gate, Final Liberation, Shadow of the Horned Rat,
and Dark Omen for about $20. Worth checking out, they're still good
games. So was Rites of War (Panzer General 40K!).

I'd like to see a 40K RTS built around the same engine they use for Company
of Heroes.

Fully-destructible environments turn me on.

That's the same one I at. I really dislike those 'Survive x turns'
missions as they are a bit of a pain normally. I think 13 is the final
mission btw.

I had a similar depate with a friend when the 40k mmorpg was announced.
Allowing players to play diffrent races would not work. For example,
fluff wise (And game wise) an IG trooper is simply a grunt with a gun in
most cases, where as a space marine is a genetically engineered super
human. That would mean that space marines would have to be specificly
stronger than everything else. It only gets worse with the likes of
inquisitors etc.

Have you played Fire Warrior on the PS2 or PC? I like the way space
marines are handled in that, it really does take some real effort to
take even one down, unless of course you are using plasma guns or
something. Thankfully they are pretty few and far between.

well inquisitors...not anymore. hell, id rather be an imperial guard
commissar. they seem to have better bonuses than inquisitors these days.
other than that i agree completely.

i never played fire warrior because i just do not like tau. they were put in
place of races that SHOULD have been showcased, and i always found them to
be an insult to long time players.
