With my new design of www.vectrex.nl up and running (still some work to
do and things to add) I had some time for a mini review of the upcoming
Spike Circus (which i have played on the retroday last month).

Spike Circus mini (p)review
Last month, Alex from Vectorzoa came to the Netherlands to visit the
Retro-Computerday. Besides Logo, his first Vectrex title, he brought a
playable demo of Spike Circus with him. While Alex was hunting for
bargains I had the chance to play the game as one of first people.

Spike Circus has his own unique overlay, and when the games starts you
are welcomed by the classic Circus tune. On the first levels you have to
ride a unicycle, and stay up for some time. You do this by balancing
with the analoge stick. When you mastered the balancing it is up to the
next level, where it gets trickier because you have to balance in a
smaller spot on the track, or you have to encounter hills etc.

If you think that's challeging, wait until Spike has to keep a chair
balanced on his head while riding the uncicycle, or juggle indian clubs.
The juggling part is very well executed, and up to 5 clubs will be
flying around our little hero. Special items will also appear to juggle
with, my son had to laugh when he saw a Scramble missile on top of
Spike's head.

This is one of those games where you want to have another go to master
the next level (50 levels). Brilliant game and very enjoyable! Watch
Vectorzoa for a release in the next months.

Ray, Having polled the good people here at RGV the response was mixed.
So considering all the extra effort it would require I don't think it's
worth producing a widescreen mode especially if people aren't united in
their desire for it.. I will use the time to produce something new and
original instead. Sorry to those who wanted widescreen,.. maybe on
another game where it REALLY benefits from it.

Cheers Alex

I would love to see Battlezone on either wide or vertical screen
format. It is my all time favourite vector based game!!

It would be awesome if the Vectrex version used both joysticks for
control (just like the real game did). Or at least have an option for
single or double joystick mode.

Double stick mode, be a little tricky trying to press fire then sadly.
Having button 1 = forwards, button 2 = backwards and button 3 = fire
would probably work in addition to having up/down on the stick.

Battlezone tread controls are analog, aren't they?

If that's true, you could either:

* build a controller where the X and Y axes are used independently to
control the treads (I think a new PS/2 controller adapter would be a
great way to do that!).

or

* build a clip, like they made for the Atari 5200, that connects two
standard controllers together so that you can do both (control the
treads with your thumbs and push the buttons with your fingers). This
could even be a couple of rubber bands (or to get a little fancier, a
pair of cast silicone double-loops that're actually the shape of the
controller). =)

What a crazy twist this thread has taken!

Nice idea Jacob, in practice its extremely easy. If you take two
Vectrex controllers rotate them left 90degrees (that's 64 Vegrees to
you Logo users) and press them together so the joysticks are at the
bottom and the buttons at the top you can use both sticks and buttons 1
and 2 with ease. No glue, no mess, no trouble. All the programmer would
have to do would be to read the X axis on each controller. Hmm now
we've sorted out all the complexities who wants to do the trivial job
of actually coding the game? Wink

Cheers Alex

Sounds like a good control plan there Smile

Though you need a one joystick control solution like what I suggested
as probably the vast majority of Vectrex owners only have one
stick...

I'm sure everyone will have already rushed out to buy their second
controller so they can play head to head Star Sling. So problem
solved! :)

(actually I agree, I'm sure most would want to play BZ on a
conventional stick, but there's that 0.01% who would make a Minicade
Vectrex Battlezone Cabinet. Smile

Geez,
I'm glad that I started this dual-stick Batlezone controller
discussion!

We sure have some good ideas here. And like Alex said: now we only
need to find someone to code the game.

Smile

And I still say that the dual-stick should be an option selectable at
the beginning of the game. That way both, single and dual stick users
could enjoy the game. I for one would be willing to splurge for a
second stick if I had such a game available. Controllers regularely
show up on eBay but they usually sell a bit above my current price
range.,
