Hey all,
I'm trying to get the old Doom to work on my new machine, which is a Windows
XP box. If it matters, I have an Sound Blaster Live Value card. I use the
setup program to set the audio options to use a "Sound Blaster". WHen I play
the game, any time a sound effect is played, the game becomes extremely slow.
The midi music seems to work fine (although it slows down with the rest of
the game when a sound is played). The smae thing happens with my old copy of
Heretic.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
Thanks,
Dave >> Stay informed about: Sound doesn't work with Classic Doom |

the original doom.exe will not work with sound with latest version of
windows; you need to get one of the doom drivers ported to windows such as
jdoom, gldoom, zdoom, etc - I use jdoom which has the best graphics and
added model features...

Can't be done with XP. You are quite lucky that hear anything at all.
It must be that the IRQ chosen for sound by PNP matches the Doom2/Heretic
default.

I have some problems running those too with 98SE and a SBlive. I don't
know what happened but they used to work perfectly in the past. I think
it's because of the DirectX updates applied over time. That's my WAG.
But I really haven't spent a lot of time trying to remedy the problem
lately. Seems like last time I twiddled with some settings and got it to
go after a while. >> Stay informed about: Sound doesn't work with Classic Doom |

Kinda late here as I've been on vacation.
Yep, it's one of the early SBLive PCI (5.1) card.
Early on I just ran it in a full screen DOS session. Then one day I
tried to run it and all was well and then it took a dump.
IIRC, there was a awful noise from the card.
I do have a spare Crystal 4614 PCI sound card I've used in the past that
emulates the classic ISA Sound Blaster. Again IIRC, it worked great.
I actually never used a ISA SB - I used a ISA PAS16 that emulated the SB. >> Stay informed about: Sound doesn't work with Classic Doom |
