?
The 360 has always relied on a 100% software emulator to run original Xbox
games. That's never changed.
Sony, on the other hand, originally released the PS3 with full hardware
support for backwards compatibility. Both the 20GB and 60GB models
contain both major processors from the PS2, allowing these PS3's to play
just about every PS2 game.
Then Sony released the 80GB PS3 in the US and Japan which removes one of
the processors, and instead relies on an emulator. This mixed solution
for BC allows these PS3's to play some PS2 games - but not nearly as many
as the older 20GB and 80GB models (which are no longer available.)
The newest PS3 model - the 40GB PS3 - contains NEITHER processor, and
therefore cannot play ANY PS2 games whatsoever.
There were worries that future PS3 models would be based on the 40GB, and
be unable to play any PS2 games. However, Sony is saying that at least
for the upcoming MGS4 PS3 bundle, the 80GB PS3 included is the same as the
one we have now.
I wouldn't expect this to last long though... It doesn't make sense for
Sony to support 2 different motherboards in this fashion. It's not cost
effective, and as they've said repeatedly, backwards compatibility isn't a
big deal to their customers.

It's not broken. It's...advanced.
