Sony happens to be bleeding red financially, the way Sega did. It is
banking on the PS3 to enable to have dominance in the market, kind of
the way Sega was hoping with the Saturn. But, like Sega way back when,
there is rumblings of corporate screw up. Like Sega, Sony faces
competition from two competitors. Oh, Sony is top dog now, which Sega
wasn't, but there appears to be similarties. PS3 is more expensive
than its rivals (just like the Saturn was in America). One could argue
Sony's bungling in the format wars is akin to Sega rolling out too many
videogame console formats for customers. The split models of the PS3
has some similarities to the 32X and Saturn splitting. Well, not as
bad, but has the chance to confuse customers more than the 360
different versions. Also just like, in the Saturn days, Sony is
releasing a black console against a console of a competitor that is
light in color (Playstation-360).

Anyhow, anyone else seeing the distinct possibility of Sony going the
way of Sega? They bleed so much ink, they feel a need to drop out of
the console business, and just go for software content? They ride God
of War, Gran Turismo, Ratchet and Clank, etc... onto future consoles,
while not making a console of their own?

I think he's playing off the pure stupidity of that jerkoff "Mr Mr" who
posted the PS3/Neo Geo thing across a bazillion different groups.

Well, secondarily. Primarily it has to do with Merc and the whole
"Dreamcast effect". I decided to then, after going around the edge, to
do one thread particular to comparing where Sony is now, with where
Sega was awhile back.

Sega had to cancel the Dreamcast, they were on the verge of complete
and total bankruptcy.

By giving the Dreamcast a premature death, it practically saved the
company and ensured it's existance for a while longer.

Although i don't understand the situation I find it startling that Sony
has sold 100 million ps2 consoles and they are in financial red zone.

"I cant wait to play Afterburner on the Xbox 360."

"I think Sony should leave the market and Sega should re-enter with a
new console."

Anything else?

The way I understand it, by the time the Saturn came out, a lot of people
were sort of on the fence about Sega due to the whole Sega-CD debacle.

When the Saturn came out, Sega America made a bunch of stupid decisions
about which games would be brought over, and then killed the console
outright after it'd only been around for, what, 9 months? (did it even
make it to a year? I don't recall.)

So when the Dreamcast came out, even MORE people were angry at Sega
because of Sega-CD and now Sega Saturn. As a result, a lot of early
adopters didn't bother with Dreamcast but sat back to 'wait and see'. In
the meantime, Sega America once again made some stupid decisions about
which games to bring over, and just when the console seemed to start
getting a foothold after a year, Sega killed it.

Sony's situation is a bit different, although they've done a wonderful job
at shooting themselves in the foot again and again which is having the
same effect - hardcore fans will hang back to 'wait and see' with the PS3.

If anything, the arrogance that Sony is showing is very similar to
Nintendo, no?
