Archived from groups: alt>games>coh (more info?)

From the boards:

If you're getting hung up at the Updater screen (connecting 1, connecting
2...) here's how to log in by bypassing the updater (NOTE: This will NOT
work if you have not downloaded the latest patch):

Make a shortcut on your desktop to CityofHeroes.EXE (NOT the City of Heroes
Updater). Now right click on the shortcut and select Properties. In the
Target window you'll see something like "C:\Program Files\City of
Heroes\CityOfHeroes.exe" (depending on where you installed CoH). Add
"-project coh" (without the quotation marks) to the target line, so that it
reads like "C:\Program Files\City of Heroes\CityOfHeroes.exe" -project coh

Note the space between .exe" and the - sign.

edited for clarity (I hope)

Hmmm... I might rethink that name for your shortcut... Sounds too much
like a porn site. Don't want people looking at your screen and getting the
wrong idea! heh

It's mostly a matter of having three or four major purposes for the gazunda
and trying to keep them isolated and functional. Across two monitors. While
not forgetting about some of my minor tools and tasks. Rrrgh.

Create a new folder on the desktop and dump clutter icon shortcuts
(rarely used ones) in it.

Or create a series of new folders matching this mindset:
TIME WASTERS (Games)
WORK PROGRAMS (Programs you use to earn a living off of)
AMUSEMENTS
UTILITIES

Ah, that would be too easy... and not NEARLY as challenging! Besides, it
would interfere with tormenting the wifey...

My best little prank was taking a screenshot of the desktop, then setting
that as the background image and using a UI tweaking program to suppress the
display of icons on the desktop... No matter how hard or fast she clicked,
she just couldn't get one of those programs to open! I found that works
great on the guys in the office too... heh

Er, yeah. I count... a dozen on my desktop right now. Along with the 30 or
so icons that I use too frequently to stuff away.

I need, I suppose, to go to a multi-machine model - one system for all the
routine junk (games, communication, MS Office-level stuff etc.) and one for
the big tools. It's the deconvenience of having my "workbench" split up,
plus the fact that I'd have to physically reconfigure my whole work space,
that holds me back.

Sounds more like you need "virtual desktops" more - just allot one for
work stuff, one for play, one for other stuff.

Heck I did that with a replacement shell back in the win3.11 days, and
again with Litestep under win95/98.

Yeah, I'm considering that - I tried it for a bit under an older Nvidia
setup, but never re-enabled multiple desktops in later installations.

I'm also looking at a 3-monitor setup to spread things out more. Gahd, it
never ends.
