Have you tried a lens cleaner? Occasionally it helps. Every six months
to a year I take my PS2 apart and give it a good clean. There are some
good pointers for cleaning PS2s in the hardware FAQs section at
Gamefaqs.com (I think they're in the Disc Read Error guides).
Alternatively you could try using a vacuum cleaner over the ventilation
slots. It helps a bit, but stripping down a PS2 isn't too difficult and
does give better performance afterwards.
