I don't know how many of you still read white dwarf, or how many people
have simply given up on it, but this months issue includes a skull pass
Dwarf and Goblin. I have to say, single pose only hurts the already
ugly dwarf minis, but the gobbo looks pretty good. I might do a proper
review in a bit, but the rest of the mag looks pretty uninspired, at
least here in the US. Anyway, seeing one of the night gobbos up close
makes me a lot more comfortable with using BoSP minis as the bulk of my
Gobbo Horde. >> Stay informed about: Skull Pass minis in White Dwarf |

As someone who's never played or cared about dwarves, all I have to say
is the reintroduction of goblin spider riders (especially in plastic)
definitely has me looking at a small goblin army...or a unit of spider
riders as DOW fast cav anyway >> Stay informed about: Skull Pass minis in White Dwarf |

I painted both of these mins up, and they actually look pretty good,
certainly good enough for the back ranks of a large unit. I'll try to
get pictures up and get them out. Anyway, as for actual content in
this months White Dwarf, unless you're wild about Skull Pass, or want
to give GW a chance to make you wild about Skull Pass, this issue is
pretty weak. Personally, I have two boxes on pre-order from my FLGS.
IMO, GW was smoking something odd when they packed well over $100 worth
of goblins alone into a $45 box set. diminished quality or not, this
is legitimate starter set for anyone wanting to get into the hobby.
It's times like this that I ahve to remember that GW is only intent on
killing interesti in 40k and the specialist games. Warhammer shall be
allowed to prosper.

I did get the WD, more out of habit than anything. I think I looked at
it over lunch yesterday and it's still where I left it. Being one of
the apparently few people who find enjoyment in it, even I felt let
down...I think it was actually thinner than normal too! Bastards.

I like the gobbo, and hate the dwarf (never liked dwarves anyway). I
think, though, that if I had 100 of these single pose gobbos I'd hate
them (but good as back-rankers in big units as you said). The value is
pretty damn crazy for dwarf/gobbo players though! I'm definitely
thinking of getting it for the greenies...loves me some spider
riders...especially when I get a shitload of stuff for a hair more than
a regiment box (warstore!). >> Stay informed about: Skull Pass minis in White Dwarf |

I love White Dwarf for a few things: nice photo features of armies,
battle reports, and the odd masterclass. I buy them mostly to avoid
buying somthing more expensive, and since I buy most of my minis second
hand, it's one of the few ways I support my LFGS finacially for
providing gaming space. I've looked at older issues, and I was
surpised to find more or less the same "here's new stuff to buy"
attitude, as well as a pretty sparse attempt at tactics, army building,
or modellling advice. When people talk of the good old days of white
dwarf, they're either talking of issues I haven't seen (a likely
prospect), or simply are referring to a time before the internet put
modeling advice, tactical articles, and sample army lists free
available instantly.

I'm with you on the Dwarves, I can't think of any GW models that I
really like in that range (barring the war machines) I lucked out, and
preordered two boxes at $30 a shot, so even splitting them, I'm getting
140 gobbos for $30, plus rules and two trolls. I couldn't pass that
up. Even if I have no clue how I'm going to use 40 gobbo short bowmen.

Amen. Our store has had skull pass on display for about a month and a
half now, and I was shocked to hear the price. Dwarves, Gobbos, Spider
Cav, a cannon, troll, and even heros... all for $45. Some of us even
got a special incentive to sweeten the deal further.
In the other topics about prices, this is a chance for newcomers to
each spend $45, split the boxes, and each have a very very decent
amount of figs.
In the spirit of being a grateful customer, I hearby vow to not make
any posts or IRL comments about GW prices for a whole month. Starting
today.

As I don't play either army, it's easy enough to pass up.
What we are seeing here is GW finally getting smart about bulk pricing
and intro pricing to draw new players into the game. I'm guessing that
Skull Pass is being sold at cost, to try to bring fresh blood into the
game to replace the older players who've stopped buying due to the price
increases.

September starts in days, you know...

Yeah, it's wise for them to make the intro so cheap. Hopefully they
will swing enough new players and keep the game fresh enough to thrive
like 40K has.
On the other hand, if you knew what the actual COST of the Skull Pass
boxed set was, you'd probably freak. *grin* Plastic + paper + labor.

After factoring in design, mold, packaging, marketing, and distribution
costs, I'm guessing it's pretty close to $45 retail.
However, keep in mind that GW makes well over 50% gross profit on
everthing else that's plastic, so they can afford to hook people in with
a cheap starter box that focuses on rules only.
