I have been reading rgra for some time, on the oook site, but I finally decided
to join in and start asking questions myself.
I have recently started playing Sangband, and I like the system overall. I do,
however, have something I'd like answered.
If you try to raise a skill too fast, you're hit with an experience cost
penalty, which goes away as you exercise the skill. The in-game docs state that
a skill is exercised when you use it to do damage or gain expierience; thus,
combat skills are exercised when you use them to hit or kill things,
Spellcasting is exercised when you hit or kill things with magic, or gain bonus
experience from casting a new spell (is that intentional, BTW?) and Disarming is
exercised by disarming traps and unlocking doors.
What exercises Burglary? I know that its trapping abilities let you damage and
kill monsters, but does anything else count as exercise - using light melee
weapons, for instance? (As the Burglary skill gives specific bonuses to that.) >> Stay informed about: Hello, all! - also [S] Skill exercise question |

You can practice burglary by setting traps, and backstabbing monsters. To
backstab a monster, make sure you are sneaking ('S'), then attack them while
they are fleeing or while they are asleep.
Also, sucessful theft trains it as well, IIRC.

Ahh! I hadn't realized that the full backstab needed sneaking to work. Thanks!
I'll try those. I'd like to do a sneaky character, but trapsetting doesn't
really fit my play style (too much stuff to carry around.) Glad to know there's
an alternative. >> Stay informed about: Hello, all! - also [S] Skill exercise question |

Let us know how you get on. I've always found Burglary impossible to
raise beyond about 30 with backstabbing and stealing - I have to start
setting traps or I have to pay over the odds to raise it further.
