Everything is separate. So you can get empty houses or houses with sims in
them. You can then place the houses (empty or occupied) on any neighbourhood
terrain you want.

Original families return in TS3 without any of this "advanced timeline"

I may be wrong but Sims 3 doesn't even sound like what we've had in 1 and 2.
I just can't get excited at all!! In a way, I am really happy that I'm not
because I feel like it's going to take a mighty powerful computer to play
sims 3. I may be wrong, but it's just a feeling I have. Since getting FT,
I've been enjoying the game more and there is so much I've not even done
with Sims 2 so I think I've got enough to keep me game happy for a long
time.
