But I assume booth maxon and your mum have read /about/ him and know just
what it is they aren't interested in.

We're going for a Guiness record....I read somewhere that all threads
deteriorate somewhere within the first 15 postings....this one has not
only deteriorated but has begun to moulder... >> Stay informed about: Some more Sims 3 stuff |

I find I can take that much more easily than Louis demanding we vote for his
acts because they "come from Northampton and their dad died". Though I
suppose Randy saying every week " I don't know man, it was a bit pitchy, you
know?" could be added to the "Simon chose the wrong song for you" and get
just as bad.

Many Brits feel that Americans don't get our irony. I reckon it is
cultural.
Anyway, don't all newspapers tend to print less than the truth the whole
truth and nothing but the truth?

Many AMericans don't but it is not cultural. It is educational. Those
that don't are the non-readers, the unintellectuals. There is a whole
segment of our society that has no clue as far as literature is
concerned because in the past two decades, the stufdy of anything but
modern literature (if you can call some of it that) was plonked. So...no
more reading Candide in high school. Or Swift's essay...If you said "How
ironic" to them they'd would think you were taling about a Sunbeam
appliance. ANyone with anything close to a traditional education does
appreciate satire and irony. One of the reasons Monty Python is still
such a hot ticket here. (Did you know Clay AIkens is actually playing a
role on Broadway in the Monty Python vehicle being performed now? He
fits with his goofy looks...)

heh....I was reading some news reports today out of China regarding the
whole Tibet issue. Their claim to total truthfulness is rather specious,
IMO. Of course, maybe they don't equate truthfulness and prevarification
as being the same thing? I will elave off the political commentary
now,,,I am sure there are those who would disagree...

A cultural effect of the educational system perhaps. I haven't noticed a
lack of understanding of it on most of the people I talk to - and that might
be because they mostly have been educated. But what we see of comedy
shows from the US tends to bear it out. What we see of comedy shows made
here often seems to me to show we have lost any sense of humour we had, but
that's another debate.

I sometimes think Monty Python is hotter your side than ours, these days,
but of course it was part of my youth, been around forever so to speak. It
wasn't so much ironic, as surreal.
I haven't seen Spamalot myself, I wasn't well when mr kat got tickets -
freebies, he does work for a ticket agency - so he took my daughter. But I
know enough about it , and of Clay Aitken, to think - yeah. Sounds
right.

I think there are places where the inhabitants are taught to believe that
everything they are told is true. That could be said for parts of our own
countries too I don't doubt, but we are, at the moment anyway, freer to
dispute it. And that is as political as I intend to get!

It's an American Idol thing....he was the first runner up on the second
season and is a goofy North Carolina type boy with an incredibly huge
tenor voice ...sort of like when Jim Nabors used to sing on Mayberry
RFD...your first thought is "That voice came out of that person??? No
way!!!" >> Stay informed about: Some more Sims 3 stuff |

I've heard about him, but the sheer volume of books in the Discworld series
and the impossibility of ever getting them in anything approaching the
correct order keeps me from trying. What are there, 40+ books in that
series?!? Some are out of print and impossible to get anymore. We have no
library here where I live.

There's 37 out and several that are waiting publication. None are out of
print or unavailable AFAIK...we've never had a problem finding
them...and they don't need to be read in consecutive order. The premise
of Discworld is the same no matter which you are reading and his
footnotes are self-explanatory. WHen I first started reading them, I
started somewhere in the middle and haven't made any attempt to lkeep
them in order. I think there are 4 publ;ished that I ahve not read...and
none that I did not like...and there are repeating characters throughout
so you become attached to the sotires and the intertwining plots....they
are a great read, even if you only erad a couple of them...problem is,
if you read a couple of them and like them, you want to read all of
them! I oftentimes buy used books from B&N...I don't care if they are
pristine and if you order a certain amount the shipping is free. >> Stay informed about: Some more Sims 3 stuff |

Ah! Well, that would explain why I never heard of him. I've managed to
avoid American Idol for several years now. <g>

There are 32 listed at booksfree.com. Perhaps I'll tackle one and see what
all the fuss is about.
