Well, I couldn't say I really LIKED Silverfall. For game play style, I'd
say it falls in between Diablo2 and Divine Divinity, say at 75%, closer
to DD
D2 <-------*-->DD
^
I'd put it here
Sadly, the game is too linear and too short. The Original campaign has
no preplayability - all characters plays through the same story, the
same places, the same quest (I'd expect, playing as a goblin, I would
get some special quests in Cloudworks, the home of goblin slave
workers... but no). The only fun I had is item farming. I found a unique
rifle, the Astral Cannon and it's powerful enough to let me play through
the game till completion.
The Skill Master is a nice feature, where you can reclaim your stat
points and skill point any time you like to try out the other classes
(so there is really no point to play a human for ranger, then replay as
an elf as a mage and so on)
My only dis-satisfaction about this game is, they purposely made your
attack so slow, so that they can promote the use of "speed up" skill or
is it the other way round? They have to put in the "speed up" skills to
justify their slow action pace.
The game is clearly and badly rushed nearing the end game. When I
reached the final boss, the game just rushed my character up to the boss
at close range (disregarding that my character is actually a ranger with
a cannon), flashes a single sentace dialog (not even with voice-over)
and the battle begins. My skill, multi-arrows didn't help making the
final battle a grand battle - With about 4 slams of multi-arrows/shots,
the boss was lying on the ground, dead. The whole "final battle" ends in
less than 3 seconds.
Another sign of the rushed work shows in the area of side quest - after
Cloudworks, the third town, there are hardly any side quests. There are
also lots of large areas which is empty, in term of population (except
monsters) and activities - no quest related to these area, in fact, you
don't even have to travel there, they are just irrelevent to the game.
Big patches of un-used land.
No teleportation points between long (and believe me, some of the
journey to a quest target is really looooong - spanning 2-3 areas the
need loading) distance. Yeah sure, you can click on map to instantly
travel to areas on map, but you need to discover that point of interest
first, before you can insta-travel. To make it worst, some quest target
is just an NPC or a generic area where you are to retrieve some item -
these targets are never marked as a target for insta-travel. So if you
died during the quest battle or died before reaching a target point,
that will be a very looooong and boring (since you already cleared the
path, you have nothing to do but just walk toward your target point)
journey.
Also, the developers decided to pre assign the skills to the keys - this
make a very messy short-cut key layout. I must constantly travel my
fingers across the keyboard to use potions (which was compulsarily
assigned to keys 9 and 0) and swith between shooting stances (I could
choose between key 1 to 4, but there is still a distance between keys 4
ang 9) and go back to keys 5 to 8 to choose the skill I want to use. I
really wished the smart ass that forced the key pre assignment would
just wise up and let the player decide freely where he/she want the
short-cut assigned to - I usually like my potions at keys 1 and 2 (it's
a habit already) and the most frequently used skills at 3 and 4, so that
I could cover all the frequently used keys with 1 hand.
The skill tree (can I call it tree? It's just a streight line for crying
out loud) is very, very limited and linear. each skill tree (if you
could call it that) path has only 4 layers, with only 1 or may be 2
being active skill. Well at least that fits well with it's inconvinient
key assignemnt anyway. However this will mean you will have to stick to
one single skill, if you don't want to overload your fingers and caused
a cramp. I could imagine playing a mage could be very boring - either yu
play with only 1 magic skill or you'll have to do the octopus dance on
the keyboard.
Some of the skills are overly powerful, i.e. the multi-arrow/shot skill
could bring down any tough enemies, even the last boss in a few quick blast.
Hopefully they (or the fans) would come out with better mods (like NWN
or MW) to make this game more worth my money.
