So, last night I caught my first shiny. Happened totally by accident
-- up until that point, I was sure it was one of those "urban legends"
where everyone "knows someone who has seen one" but no one has seen
one themselves. I was surfing up in Lake Acuity (trying to catch a
swarming Smoochum) -- with literally two minutes on the clock until
midnight came and washed them all away. I'm PRAYING not to hit
anything in the lake, since I have to get all the way to the other
side in two minutes. Which means, of course, that I hit three on my
way across the lake. I dutifully am tapping the stylus on where the
"Run Away" button appears ...
.... until I notice that the Psyduck I'm about to run away from is ...
blue. (I guess cold from Lake Acuity?)
I never did catch a Smoochum. *laugh*
But it got me thinking ... since it's a random thing, can you hatch a
shiny Pokemon? Or is it only something that happens with wild Pokemon? >> Stay informed about: Shinies |

Congrats. I actually noticed the different coloration of my shiny Budew
before it blinded me with shine-ness, and I had just enough time to wonder
if it was a gender variation before my DS went *FWOOSH* and burnt my skin
off. It's a gothy-looking Roselia now, and once I get it's level-up moves
out of the way it's going to be a gothy-looking Roserade.

From what I understand, the chances of a Pokemon being shiny are the same,
regardless of it being wild or hatched. Back in GSC, though, shininess was
based on stats and you could actually breed shinies.

Like Chet said, shininess isn't hereditary ...
.... but actually, you CAN hatch shinies! It is, however, just as
(un)likely as meeting one in the wild.
Back in ... GSC, I think, the second generation games, the odds of a
random Pokémon being shiny were roughly one-in-eight-thousand. I've
heard it's laughably high now, like one in thirty thousand. That
said, in DP so far (around 200 hours of play) I've met two shinies - a
Buizel and a Golbat - so either I'm ludicrously lucky or the odds
aren't as bad as they say. Or, um, maybe I train too much. Also
possible.

No it isn't. It hasn't been since GSC. It's far, far less likely by now -
1 in 65,536 I believe, making them eight times as rare.
