I thought mame32 was the version that had the built in front end and
plain old mame was the command line version, is this mame ui something
new? What is it?

Also is there anything wrong with using the version of mame that has
the built in gui(frontend) with another frontend program. Does it slow
anything down or have any negative affects?

I know people will say why would you use a mame with frontend version
with another frontend, well first I think the mame frontend looks like
a computer and I personally like the arcade look that other frontends
offer and also I already have the mame version that has the built in
gui complete with working roms.

On that note, as long as the version is the same are the roms the same
for both command line and gui?

Thanks

MAMEUI is the new name for MAME32, I have used MAMEUI with Maximus
arcade with no problems.

Yes all the roms are the same.

using the mame 32 frontend helps greatly on setting up and configuring the
games to run. The front end the mame32 has is a fair one and is easy to set
up. For those who want something better you go out and get a better
frontend. The executables in mame 32 and regualr mame are the same the only
difference is the frontend loader. Another reason for having a diferent
frontend is that the mame32 frontend does not support adding juke boxes and
daphne and other emulator programs. When you run a diffferent frontend
loader like mamewah or maximus you do not use the frontend loader for mame32
you just use the executable for it

MAME32 was renamed to MAMEUI

Where is the sense in doing this? I want an umbrella for my umbrella...

MAMEUI and MAME support the same files (as long as the versions match).

mamepgui is the frontend loader mamep is the executable you can run mame
executable in commandline to make it work without a frontend. but if you
use a frontend like maximus you tell it to run the mamep executable and all
is well.

Ok, thanks now I get it, but I put together a mame for someone and
used mame32 with Maximus frontend (which I will no longer do on my
machine) but did I sacrifice any perfromance by doing that?

there is no sacrafice either way you are only using the frontend that you
want. The executable is loaded by the frontend and run by the frontend be
it maximus or the mamegui. the executable is clean of the front ends. no
penalty for using one over the other

MAME32 is now called MAMEUI. They have a 64 bit version too, thus the
reason for the name change.
