Can a standard Series 2 40 hr tivo unit be used with directv ?
I already have a directv TIVO in one room. In another I have a Directv
receiver. A local store is selling their discontinued Series 2 standard
TIVO units for free (after discount). So it would be nice to use it (may be
in series with the directv receiver?) in my second room if it would work.
Would it?

Yes, in series as you suspected. You will have to setup the IR blaster
for it to control the receiver, and it doesn't have some features of the
DTivo, such as dual tuners and 5.1 sound.

From a technical standpoint, yes it'll work. You could use that standalone
Tivo to control the DirecTV receiver box. But you may not want to do this
as it'll cost you. DirecTV charges per receiver (regular or dvr) and then a
whole house charge for DVRs. That standalone Tivo won't be covered as part
of your DirecTV bill. You'd have to get a Tivo account. This on top of
your DirecTV bill. Not exactly a bargain.
Seek out another DirecTivo. Then you can network the two of them together
and move programs between them.

If you hack them...
This functionality doesn't happen out of the box.
But I love my networked HDVR2s. >> Stay informed about: Series 2 TIVO and Directv? |

Thank you. I guess I'll pass on it.

How does one network them?

Short answer, get an InstantCake CD from PTVnet and reload the software on
the drive. Then attach an ethernet cable between the two (usually into
whatever network you've already got setup) and that's it. Wireless can work
but it's *considerably* slower than using a wired connection. >> Stay informed about: Series 2 TIVO and Directv? |

Thanks. That's a useful lead. I guess to use that CD I would have to remove
the hard drive and insert it into a PC. Would subsequent "software updates"
from DirecTV undo the setup?
Thanks.

What about a hack that will allow moving video off a computer hard drive
to the tivo, like the tivo option that requires a paid subscription? I'd
like to use my Toshiba SD-H400 (free 3day subscription) as an tv
interface for a computer based DVR. I don't want it bad enough to pay
$13/mo for the priviledge (:->) but it would be nice to have since I've
run out of inputs to the TV. >> Stay informed about: Series 2 TIVO and Directv? |

Kernel command line: root=/dev/hda4 dsscon=true console=2,115200 upgradesoftware=false
That last bit prevents software updates from being applied automatically.

Nope, if you want the service you pay for it, no way around it. >> Stay informed about: Series 2 TIVO and Directv? |

Yes you need to remove the drive to do the update. It's worth the effort.
Yes, it can block software updates. But considering how infrequently
DirecTV allows updates that's not likely to be much of a problem. But it
can be configured to allow updates. The only downside being that you'd then
have to reapply the patches the upgrade CD makes for you automagically. Not
a big deal. >> Stay informed about: Series 2 TIVO and Directv? |

I've read about such a hack in the dealdatabase forums but last time I
checked (and it was a while ago), the guys who wrote it were being
elitists and wanted people to have to install Eclipse, check out the sources
from CVS, compile them and then figure out how to install the software.
Someone proposed building an installer and was smacked down. Maybe
by now there's something more widely available for those of us who
don't want to put that kind of effort into it. I also have no idea how
good the application is and what sort of codecs it supports. >> Stay informed about: Series 2 TIVO and Directv? |

Yes, but they know what they're talking about. It's like an amusement park

I'm not saying they don't know what they're talking about, I've spent
countless hours over
the past few years in those forums figuring out stuff, but it really annoys
me when someone
comes along and wants to help simplify something and is jumped on. It's one
thing to learn
the TiVo OS internals, file system and architecture, but is it really
necessary to force someone
to learn how to use the Eclipse IDE, CVS and compilers on their PC which has
absolutely
nothing to do with TiVo. >> Stay informed about: Series 2 TIVO and Directv? |
