What are my options for synchronizing a Series 1 clock w/out a TiVo
subscription? I've got 2 subscribed TiVos that use the Internet. But my
Series 1 only has a modem ... and I don't think my Vonage service likes TiVo
modems. Thanks in advance!

Make a daily call to TiVo. It may fail due to no subscription, but it
will have already set the time before it checks that. I think a
"test call" will also set the time.

I thought it was more like analog modems not liking VOIP. Ick.

I use a Turbonet board and a DSL connection.

How do you feel about occasionally carrying a TiVo and a UPS (so
it's operating while you are carrying it) over to a neighbor's house
to plug into their phone line? Careful not to bounce it around too
much: hard disks don't like shocks while they are running.

For what reason would one need to have the unit powered up while taking it
to the neighbor's house to use the phone line?

I find the clock gets messed up if the power goes off for a while.
There's not much point in setting the clock if you're going to
immediately screw it up again, so the important time to have the
Tivo powered up is when you bring it BACK. Or is there some battery
in my Series 1 that I don't know about and needs replacing?

Yeah, the RTC has a battery. If your doesn't, you have issues. If they
didn't have batteries, then everybody would have recording issues from
between a power restoration (like a blackout) until next call in.

Yes, there is a standard computer real-time-clock battery inside
your TiVo. It is possible the battery is good but the battery
holder is not.

Very early Series 1 units had a problem were there was too much
flux on the circuit board for the battery to make contact.
Every time my Sony SVR-2000 lost power, the date would become
really screwy, like 7 years in the future. (You have to navigate
to the System Information screen to see what year it thinks it is.)

The fix: Remove the cover and locate the battery. Untwist two
of the pieces of metal holding the circuit board to the chassis,
just enough to get the battery to slide out of its holder.
Use a screwdriver to scrape off the insulating gunk that was
preventing the bottom of the battery from making a good
electrical contact with the pads there. Reassemble. No more
silly clock problems.

Thanks, everyone, for your responses!

I bit the bullet and subscribed the unit ... just didn't have the
functionality I needed w/out the subscription.

My data rates are excellent for Vonage, but the latest Sony Series 1
sometimes balks and aborts the downloads.

I'm using Turbonet w/ another Sony Series 1 ... and also have a Series 2.

Been TiVo'ing since 2000 and wouldn't be w/out it.
