Hardware sales

NDS - 524,200
PS3 - 491,800
Wii - 462,800
Xbox 360 - 352,600
PSP - 190,400
PS2 - 146,000

Top 10 software sales

1. Halo 3: ODST (360) / Microsoft / 1,520,000
2. Wii Sports Resort w/ Wii Motion Plus (Wii) / Nintendo / 442,900
3. Madden NFL 10 (360) / Electronic Arts / 289,600
4. Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story (NDS) / Nintendo / 258,100
5. The Beatles: Rock Band (360) / MTV Games / 254,000
6. Madden NFL 10 (PS3) / Electronic Arts / 246,500
7. Marvel: Ultimate Alliance 2 (360) / Activision / 236,000
8. Batman: Arkham Asylum (PS3) / Square Enix (Eidos) / 212,500
9. Guitar Hero 5 (360) / Activision / 210,800
10. The Beatles: Rock Band (Wii) / MTV Games / 208,601

What a difference a price cut makes, huh?

Here's some perspective: This is the 3rd highest monthly sales for the
PS3 since launch. The only other months that were higher were December
2007 and December 2008 (around 700,000 each). This is the 6th time
they have out-sold the Xbox 360 (first time in 14 months) and the very
first time they have outsold the Wii. This is the second time they
have beaten prior years sales since October, 2008 (first time was
August).

The weird part is that it didn't turn into software sales. Only 2 PS3
games in the top 10 and both of those were hold overs from before the
price cut (Madden, Batman). Of course we only have the top 10, they
might have claimed more spots in the top 20.

Of course now it's just a matter of maintaining sales. At this rate
they will over-take the 360 in 33 months. 441 months to catch the
Wii... so, yeah, that's out of reach.

That doesn't strike me as weird. The two top selling PlayStation 3
games at the time made the top 10. There weren't any other big games
released so there should be no massive sales.

People buying PS3s right now are either people who already own one and
upgraded (thus, they already have the games) or people who have never
owned before (thus, they'll be interested in the entire library and
not just the latest games).

I don't see the system consistently beating the Xbox 360 or the Wii
but I do see it being more competitive moving forward. It will almost
assuredly wipe the floor with them when God of War III comes out next
year and probably when every other big title comes out. Whether it can
also perform like that during the "down time" remains to be seen.

Problem is... there's less PS3's sold this year than last year... and more
360's sold this year than last year. So Yeah.

Jonah does have a point though...

At this point last year the PS3 had sold 2,250,900 units, more than
they had the year before and more than the 2,088,400 units the 360 had
sold through 2008. This year so far they have only sold 1,943,500
units, 307,400 less than they did last year and 448,000 less than the
360 has done so far this year.

They can still pull out 2nd place for the year if they have decent
sales in Oct - Nov, but it's going to be close.

Did you actually graduate from high school at any point? You seem to
have a really big problem comprehending what anyone says here. You
consistently respond to posts with "counter arguments" that have
nothing to do with the originally stated perspective.

What exactly does the fact that the PlayStation 3's sales for 3/4 of
the year have not yet topped its sales for 4/4 of last year have to do
with either:

a) PS3 hardware sales not translating into software sales *not* being
weird;

or

b) PS3 hardware sales *not* consistently beating 360 and Wii hardware
sales but being more competitive moving forward except when big PS3
titles come out?

"So Yeah" what exactly?

I hold you in much higher regard than Jonah especially when it comes
to anything that requires actual thinking so it surprises me when you
say that "Jonah does have a point."

Jonah does not have a point. He simply made an observation that the
PlayStation 3 has not yet outperformed compared to 2008. Anybody can
regurgitate sales data.

What Jonah failed to do was recognize that sales *should* be lower
when, up until August 18 of this year, the lowest price point in the
PlayStation 3 hardware catalog was $400, just like it was all of 2008,
at which time it was already considered *too high* a price point.

Sony needs to sell less than 1.7 million PlayStation 3s in North
America to match their total North American sales from last year,
going into the holiday shopping season fresh off a price cut *and* a
brand new model. During the same time span last year, Sony managed to
sell over 1.3 million at the $400 price point - do you really think
they won't be able to handily beat those numbers with a $300 model and
a flagship game like Uncharted 2 fresh on the shelves (compared to
Resistance 2 which nobody really wanted and LittleBigPlanet which
hardly anyone wanted)?

Jonah failed to recognize any of these things in falling right back
into mindless fanboi mode to try to find *something* to downplay
Sony's good news, which is exactly the type of thing that his mirror
image Blig tried to do all the time. What's worse is that he did this
in response to a post in which I mentioned things that have *NOTHING*
to do with the data he was referring to.

I know you're best buds and all now that you're writing for
GameStooge, but don't keep enabling his idiocy.

Again with the lack of comprehension. Okay, let me school you once
again since we've been through this before...

An ad hominem argument is when Person A tries to refute a statement by
Person B by attacking a characteristic of Person B instead of the
statement itself.

That is clearly not what I did. Nick's statement was that you were "in
love with a corporation.....who could care less about you." At first
glance, this might be misconstrued as an ad hominem argument when it
is in fact not one since he at no point tried to refute your argument
but instead merely made an observation about your behavior.

Your response to that was that Nick was "assigning (his) own fanboy
obsession on (you)," which is inherently a denial that you are a
fanboy, which everyone here knows to not be the truth. In any case, my
statement cannot be an ad hominem argument because my attack is indeed
focused directly on the statement you presented. You deny being a
fanboy and I submit that everyone here knows you are a raging,
mindless fanboi.

If you want to see ad hominem arguments, look no further than Blig
Merk's posts where he tries to refute some pro-Xbox or anti-
PlayStation statement simply because the person making it is, say,
"making up" a congenital defect. He cannot counter based on merits so
he instead resorts to attacking the person instead of the argument.

Further, an ad hominem argument is almost never a fallacy in itself.
The effectiveness of an ad hominem argument is in its accuracy about
some negatively perceived trait of the person making the original
statement in order to misdirect the "audience" into believing that
anything that person says must be wrong because it came from a person
with that trait. If the ad hominem arguer outright lies about the
other person, most people will know it and it reduces the credibility.

For example, if someone said that we shouldn't vote for the health
insurance bills Obama supports because he hates babies, that person
wouldn't get very far.

Now, if you want to label posts we've made in this thread, we should
go back to this post by you:

"Problem is... there's less PS3's sold this year than last year... and
more 360's sold this year than last year. So Yeah."

It borders on being a strawman fallacy because you attempted (but
failed) to counter my statement that the PlayStation 3 should be more
competitive now with the price cut by pointing out its inability to
surpass its 2008 numbers so far.

In closing... try again.

That's it? After all the incredible buzz and hype the price cut and
the slim model created and this is all the PS3 can do? The weekly
sales numbers for the PS3 are already declining in Japan after the
short sales bump from the price cut/slim model so it looks like the
PS3 is going to remain in last place for a long time.

Oh how the mighty have fallen.

Nice try, mental hatchling. In the past, I've dared you to show proof
of my fanboyism, and you fail to do so again and again. As for proof
of your fanboyism, it's evident any time you put virtual pen to
paper. Considering I have more 360 games than PS3 games, you fail yet
again. Time and time again, you focus on any little bit of negativity
involving Sony, yet remain silent regarding Microsoft, except when
your own temper tantrums about how you could've done better marketing
for some game you like force you to do otherwise. So, I wonder what
disclosures you'll have to make under that new law regarding blogs and
corporate "presents", hmmm?
