Ok...no thread so I'll stick my foot out and start one.

I'm in the middle of Scratches and for the second time, I had to quit the
game because...well, call me a 'wus'...but I couldn't take it, ha. The
anxiety builds not knowing what awaits around every "next" dark corner or
room...and all the while 'expecting' something sinister to jump out at
you...well, I'm having to quit the game and 'rest', ha. I'm living the main
character's part.

Remember near the end of the first Aliens movie, when S. Weaver's character
had to move through a darkened corridor to get to the escape pod...knowing
that the Alien monster was directly in her path just a few minutes prior?
Now that was 'suspense'. And anxiety.

That's similar to my experience with Scratches. But what is odd, not a
whole lot has really happened [action wise in the game]. Which is why I
just had to comment on the 'effect' that this game imbues on, well at least
me, through 'suggestive imagination' and little else.

It is something we have lost touch with I think, in our gore fests and porno
accurate realism...in all the arts...where designers, creators, and
producers and whomever has forgotten the most powerful and nearly limitless
resource..."the viewer/player's imagination". Adventure gaming is not dead
as one thread seemed to imply; I don't think developers have even
'scratched' [ahem] the surface of the potential of the interactive novel.

Excellent post. My wife is reluctant to go back to it for similar reasons.
I'm still visiting it occassionally, in spite of the
raise-the-hair-on-your-arms creep me out factor that it has. Not looking
forward to having to go back into the basement...

Thanks Tooly,

I was debating on wheather I should order this game.
If it creeps you out that bad then it looks like my kind of game.
I ordered Dark Fall l and it should arrive on Monday but I'll go ahead
and order Scratches as well.

Yes...ha...that durned basement. I find myself perusing every other room in
the house...only going there when all other options are exhausted, ha. I
try and tell myself it's just a game, just graphics on my computer...but I
still feel this great anxiety and dread. What's so strange is that it is
all in my own mind; there is so little actual action...only tidbits of
suggestion here and there. It's made me realize my own imagination is far
more succinct in creating whatever it is that scares us, and perhaps the
bigger monster of them all is our 'fear of the unknown' [which is lurking
around ever corner of that house, ha].

I just played the Scratches demo and it's Awesome.
You get to explore a good part of the Ground floor and yes there
is a key to the basement but well hidden.
Just playing the demo, I was getting a terrible feeling of lonliness
and isolation.
It was so bad I had to go outside for some fresh air a few times.
That's when I looked up at the sky and noticed the clouds were moving.
I got a feeling it was going to start raining any minute.
Back inside the house, I got a little startled when the phone started
ringing.
It was what's his name telling me the electrician would meet me at the
gate
to turn on the electricity.
But that's a long story.
If you haven't download the demo yet, it's worth playing.
And tooly, I like your description of "Interactive Novels"
