Over at SegaFans I've been slowly adding entries to what I'm calling the
"Sega Buyer's Guide". In these entries I've included moderately sized
scans of the cover, manual, and disc (and sometimes more) whenever possible.
I've been considering doing a couple of related things as far as scans
go, but I wanted to see if there's any interest in it first.
First, I'm considering making high resolution scans (300 dpi or so) of
the front and back covers for each game, so people who might be missing
the manual or case or whatever will at least be able to have something
that they could print out and use to make it look nicer. Due to the
size of high resolution scans, I would still use the smaller ones for
general purpose stuff, but have the high res ones in zip files (one zip
per game).
The other thing I've been considering is making jewel case or dvd case
style inserts for US Sega CD and Saturn games, since those big plastic
cases tend to break so easily. It would save space and save worry about
breaking cases, but still give the games a nice professional looking
place on a shelf. They might be cropped or resized versions of the
original, or possibly even a brand new cover entirely.
Is there any interest from you folks in either of these projects?
And by interest, I mean interest in downloading these scans/inserts or
possibly even creating some yourself.
Also, is there anyone else already undertaking a project similar to
either of these? >> Stay informed about: Sega Scans |

I'd say that for Genesis and 32X games this would be *very*
usefull, since most idiot consumers through away the perfectly good
boxes. As for Sega CD and Saturn, I agree with Ted, that it'd be
neater if the images fit in a jewel case rather than being full sized,
since nobody's going to have the case without the box art for more than
one or two games.

If you could figure out how to do this *and* have room in the case for
the manual without folding it, you'd be a the coolest fella on the
Internet.

good idea, but you have to be careful as it's technically a copyright
infringement, so sega could force you to remove them if they get wind
and don't approve.

It's a helpful idea, but I'm not sure how much it would be used by
people who have legit games.
I do have a number of legit caseless Saturn games (razzafrazzin
Funcoland... razzafrazzin Funcoland customers...), but a CD cover sized
insert would make more sense for me, as my case bound legit Saturn games
take up enough room already, whereas my official-caseless games sit
happily with the Japanese Saturn games, taking up much less space. >> Stay informed about: Sega Scans |

Yeah, if I did do DVD cases, I'd also make an inside insert - wouldn't
be a full instruction manual though.
Maybe a quickstart sheet or something. >> Stay informed about: Sega Scans |

Heck, maybe I'll bring one of 'em to Gamestop along with a game I don't
play and see if they take it for trade-in credit.
If they give me a confused look, I'll tell them a story about a Rhode
Island court case where several movie studios sued Microsoft, Sony, and
Nintendo to prevent them from using dvd cases for their games - arguing
that it would cause confusion where people thinking they were buying a
DVD movie were actually buying a game. I'll tell them that the courts
ruled in favor of the movie studios and now all games in Rhode Island
must be sold in jewel cases.
When they ask about why this didn't happen with music CDs, I'll tell
them that a similar case was filed shortly after the movie studios won,
but the courts dismissed the case on the grounds that jewel cases have
been in use for software for just as long as they have for music, so
neither side could claim the sole right to them.
I wonder how far we can propogate this story? Obviously it wouldn't fly
in Rhode Island, but I think starting it out here in California, we
could probably hit Ohio, South Carolina, or even Florida with little
problem. >> Stay informed about: Sega Scans |

Then you'd better add something about a similar case in Texas that was
dismissed outright simply because "everything's bigger in Texas". >> Stay informed about: Sega Scans |
