Post subject: Scanning planets

I have the impression that the chances to scan a planet's surface are
quite low at the moment. I have a ship in 20-30 LY distance at max
scanner range (300) and the planet still won't reveal its valuable
secrets.

Don't you have to be within 5ly to pick-up details like metals, soil
and natives?

Simply focus a superlaser upon the planet in question and analyse the
resulting emission spectra.

According to Wiki (Sensors):

Ships vs. Planets:

Visible within range
Partial scan within half range
Full scan within 25 ly
