Hello,

Over the weekend, I started playing WoW on a home made system. The
motherboard is a Gigabyte board. I have factory supplied heatsink/fan
mounted on the CPU. In addition, I have to two case fans, PSU fan and
one that's on the video card. After playing WoW for about an hour,
the CPU temp will rise to about 44 C and the system temp will rise to
about 35 C. I was wondering if you'll think this is within safe
tolerance? I've tried to get this info from the web and from the AMD
site but nothing. Everthing is default and nothing has been
overclocked.

On a related note, this rig (2 gb ddr2 1066 ram and a 8600GTS RT video
card) is really running WoW well. In Stormwind and Shattrath, I'm
getting about 50+fps. With my other machine, I was lucky to get 19fps
while visiting these spots. I'm also running medium to high settings
on all sliders. The entire setup minus the case and optical drives
only cost me $550. I was very pleased that everything plugged and
play as advertised. I had no issues. The only problem I do have is
with the mobo monitoring software I got with the gigabyte. I get a
windows system error when the Easytune software loads. This is
gigabytes utility for monitoring temps and overclocking.

Thanks Brian. I really wish the AMD documentation would include this
info in their installation instructions. The only thing I could
gather from the default bios settings is the system/cpu shutoff temp
is 60C. I've left that on.

I appreciate the info! Thanks a million. I feel much better. I was
worried I would have to buy a new case with some fancy cooling system.

Another question for you all. Do you think pumping up the eye candy
settings both in the WoW video options screen and settings at the
windows level (e.g., pushing up AA, mipmap, etc..) that this would
result in the CPU running hotter? I know that the dedicated PCIe
video card would be doing most of the work but doesn't the CPU also
work have to harder as the GPU is required to do more work?

Gary,

Thanks for that link. I had just done a clean install of XP on a bran
new harddrive and that stinking error was popping up. I'm going to
grab the new utility from the link you provided and hopefully that
error window will go away.

It's actually quite low for AMD chips! They're designed to work well at
65C, with a rated peak of 85C. Note that some of the other components might
not like that though.

I wouldn't worry about a thing with those temps. *

That's nothing, that's well within the realm of normal operation for a
modern CPU. It's actually quite cool.

Leaving aside that the video card will itself get hotter, which will raise
temperatures on the whole system unless you have an isolated video card
bay, the answer is still probably yes. There's some nominal processor cost
for increasing detail, even though the video card does most of the work.
You've got plenty of headroom though.

A couple things though:
- Raise the temp cutoff in your bios to 65C. AMD chips run hot, and it's
possible that sensors could spike, resulting in a needless shutdown.
- If you use an LCD panel, don't turn on AA settings - they're pretty much
wasted. *

In the realm of AMD chips, where the top end can be termed the Fiery
Pits Of Hell, you have a Hand-Warmer.

Hell, the CPU cores in my Macbook Pro hit 75 without even breathing hard.
