Hey, sorry for the noob question, but how come when I offer things at
an altar I sometimes get the message "nothing happens"? It doesn't
seem like it's a result of the monster not being tough enough, because,
for example, sometimes the sacrifice of a warhorse will be accepted,
and then the next minute I'll get the above mentioned message. Anyone
know?

Doing well with a Valkerie, MJ+7, rings of both teleport and teleport
control, no wishes yet, pretty much everything blessed. About to cross
into "Okay, this is a serious game" mode. Last time I made the mistake
of going below the castle, panicked when Juiblex made me sick, and
prayed to a wrathful Moloch.

Also: any other ways of getting water for blessing than diluting
potions in fountains? They're all going to be dried up soon.

This is an explicit request for spoilers, so:

1. If you're standing on water (not over it), you can dip in pools and
it won't dry up the water. You'll need water-walking boots for that.
2. Zapping with a wand of cancellation will turn most magical potion
types into uncursed water, although some will turn into fruit juice
instead. Non-magic potions will only be uncursed.
3. You can drop all your water-damagable items (or just put 'em in an
oilskin sack) you want to save and just jump into a pool. You'll
always survive if there's a spot of land to escape to and (probably)
aren't too burdened.
4. You could probably just throw the potions into a small pool, freeze
the water then dig down with a pick-axe. I've never done this myself
just to dilute potions though.

Rather indirectly to water, dipping amethysts into booze and unihorns
into sickness will produce fruit juice. Aside from being good to drink,
it's easier to dilute 10 fruit juices than 5, 3, 2 potions of fruit
juice, booze, and sickness. Also, cancelling potions will produce
either water, booze, oil, or fruit juice, depending on what the potion
was.

You can also dip a unicorn horn into hallucination, blindness,
or confusion.

you can also do this in shops before you pay for the stuff...just
drop it and pick it up again, and you'll be charged the price for
uncursed water instead of the original potion. I don't know if
that's a bug or not, but it works, at least in the version I play
(which I believe is 3.1.3)

The monster is too old. You spent too much time dragging the corpse to
the altar, or the corpse was not fresh in the first place (for example, a
zombie).

Mild hint: There are more sources of water in the dungeon. Also, certain
items can remove certain magical effects from objects.

This works for all water in the dungeon-- including that on Medusa's
(and Juiblex's) level and the moat around the castle (as well as other
moats).

It usually takes several trips into the pool to blank scrolls and
potions-- seems to be a random dice roll.

Also, you can create a random number of pools by pickaxing a fountain.
Stand on the fountain square and apply your pickaxe downward. Be sure
that anything you don't want to get wet is off in another room.

I believe they have fixed this in more recent versions:

if(singlepotion->unpaid && costly_spot(u.ux, u.uy)) {
You("use it, you pay for it.");
bill_dummy_object(singlepotion);
}

why on earth are you playing something so old?

oops, I'm sorry, it's 3.3.0. Not the current version, but
not quite as old as 3.1.3 Smile For some reason, that number
had stuck in my mind, and I didn't check before posting.
I never upgraded to a newer version because I didn't want
to clear out my highscore and bones files.
