I've finally pluged into the WoW, on the Dragon blight server, using
the same name as my SWG toon "Eerfa", if your around say hello....
A work colleague has some contacts at GAME and they say SWG is on it's
way out, not sure if that really true or not though.
See you there ! >> Stay informed about: SWG to WoW |

There is always speculation as to whether a game is "dieing".
They have said Ultima Online is on IT'S way out for 5 years now. It's
still going strong!
Anarchy Online was supposedly dieing after it's miserable launch. I
think everything that COULD have gone wrong did with their launch but
it still has a loyal enough of a following to be running as well.
I think the only one that has died that had a big name was Asheron's
Call.... or am I mistaken here?? One was just closed down wasn't it?? >> Stay informed about: SWG to WoW |

Causes of SWG Downfall:
1) Player Cities - made the already small world even smaller.
2) Player Shuttles - made travel instant and a joke, places that were
hard to get to suddenly found a shuttle 100m away.
2a) Player Vehicles - Dathomir? No Problem. Krayt? No Problem.
Vehicle = no chance of beinh killed, or at least a 90% reduction in
chance.
3) Inter-Planet Insta Travel - made travel even more of a joke and
further reduced player interaction.
4) Jedi Balance - People cried that Jedi were over powered, wanted a
character that took over a year to get to knight to be on par with some
snot nose commando that too 5 days to finish. So Jedi got their balls
cut off.
5) Jedi Difficulty - why make jedi hard to get when the player base can
whine for it to be easy.
6) Lack of Quests - quests are lame, give furniture 90% of the time,
and are few and far between. Care to see a quest system with teeth -
take a look at WoW, EQ, EQ2, pretty much any other MMORPG.
7) Alienation of Hardcore player base - do I ever need to comment here?
The fact is that the force is strong in SWG. That force is known as
the whiner crybabies that was everything handed to them on a platter.
They have changed SWG and put it into a downward spin. I love star
wars and spect 1.5 years jumping through their hoops. I too am at WoW
and find it superior in every respect. I thought about returning to
SWG but frankly I find the recent changes a complete mockery. >> Stay informed about: SWG to WoW |

That has to be the most accurate one sentence statement ever written.
I've been playing MMOGs for about 6 years now. EQ, EQ2, SWG, Matrix Online,
CoH, DAoC, WoW, Guild Wars, UO, and probably a few I've forgotten about.
Every time a game changes and a lot of vets leave, people (particularly the
disgruntled vets who've left but still have paid time on their accounts)
begin to proclaim that the end in nigh.

I agree there, too.

There is a key ingredient to AO's continued existence that's significantly
lacking in SWG (or any other SOE product, really). Outstanding customer
service.
After their disasterous launch, Funcom bent over backwards to make their CS
the hallmark of MMO gaming, and they've done just that. Within 3 days of
starting your first character, you will be visited by an ARK (AO's version
of a GM/Guide) who will check in on you .. make sure you understand what
you're supposed to be doing, answer any and all questions you might have, no
matter how long it takes.
When I was playing AO, I never waited longer than 20 minutes for an ARK to
show up after a petition had been submitted.
There are a lot of companies, game and otherwise, who could learn a lot from
Funcom's CS department.
> I think the only one that has died that had a big name was Asheron's

EA closed down Earth and Beyond about 18 months or so ago. A lot of smaller
ones have come and gone ... Motor City Online and WWII Online (talk about a
disastrous launch) are a couple that leap to mind.
I honestly don't know if The Sims Online is still up and running or not.
That's one I never played ... not my cup of tea.
All of that being said, SWG doesn't look too healthy at the moment. I'm
seeing a lot of TV and print advertisement which I'm pretty sure was paid
for my LA. I don't see that sort of advertising campaign for EQ2, and if I
were a suit at SOE that's what I'd rather be spending ad money on right now.
They've made it enough like a hybrid between EQ and WoW that it now has a
chance at survival.

Asheron's Call is still running, but the "sequel" Asheron's Call 2
will be terminated on December 30. >> Stay informed about: SWG to WoW |

I've only been in WoW for about 1/2 hour last night, and i'm very
impressed with it all. The graphics are really good, even the little
beginning quests were good. Go and find 3 different things with the
little quest and return them to the owner for the quest loot and being
able to see what you might want. No lag....very pleasing to the eye and
very enjoyabel 1/2 hour. I miss Pre-cu SWG, on the last night before
the NGE i'd just made MLS & MDEF, full template and was looking forward
to doing some quests, then it all changed. I like the SWG idea but WoW
gets my vote now even though i'm not really into orcs/dwarfs etc but i
can definately see the WoW appeal....and shall be starting to play i'm
only a lvl 4 gnome/rogue and he's a cool little animation (Eerfa).
(same name as my SWG toon)
I shall keep an eye on the SWG banter and forums to see what
happens...but i'm not hopefull...would i return to a pre-nge
rollout.....Hmmmm not sure, might hold me for a month or so but i
think they've spoilt it for me. WoW is a new and fresh start, i can
here my wife moaning again after a 2 month break from
mmorpg.....hehe...
later dudes........ >> Stay informed about: SWG to WoW |

Geezzz.... I forgot about Sims Online. I was there for that too.....
it was a beautiful launch. Went off without a hitch. Reason for that I
think was the fact that it was the most BORING game on the market!!!!
Nothing happening = No Launch Problems!!!
Hehe, We could write a book on game launches and game deaths here.
Thing is, the game has to really REALLY stink for it to die off.....
ie WWII Online!
WHEN oh WHEN is somebody going to do a GOOD game on the American
West?? If done along the lines of WoW it could be amazing. Imagine,
Gunslingers... hiring on for range wars.... Indians and soldiers....
prospectors and gold rushes (Imagine THAT in an online environment).
Saloons and dance hall girls..... Gamblers!!!! It could be Amazing if
done properly!!! Oh to hit a BIG lottery!!!! >> Stay informed about: SWG to WoW |

Stuff the old west. Give me a MMOG set in one of Masumune Shirows worlds:
ie, Appleseed, Ghost in the Shell or even Dominion. Heck - they already have
big breasted babes in them without the marketing department having to get
busy, plus, after seeing WoW with it's simplistic cartoony graphics, I
really think Manga/Anime would convert well to MMOG. >> Stay informed about: SWG to WoW |

Ahhhh....
Anime isn't my cup of tea. I like my cartoons in the Bugs
Bunny/Roadrunner genere`.
You are right though. If the flat, limited polygon world of WoW can
excell then anything could happen.
Once you are in the gane though it doesn't seem to matter and in
fact.... the distance views are quite nice. Funny though seeing
everything appears to be 1 pixel thick! >> Stay informed about: SWG to WoW |

WOW gameplay is extremely addicting.
I do agree the graphics are not top notch but in it's own way it's very well
done.
Don't be surprised if blizzard attempts to do a graphics overall in the
future by way of expansion. Everquest did it with Shadow of Luclin
expansion. UO attempted to with Turd Dawn, and DAOC have had several
graphic update revamps. >> Stay informed about: SWG to WoW |

What surprises me about WoW graphics is the shallowness of their
graphics engine..... and the fact that they still suffer from pretty
bad bouts of lag. I got a letter in response to a complaint that
basically says they have instituted a server maximum population and a
login queue buffering system in an effort to ease the lag issues they
are suffering. Nice...... Penalize your customer base while you are
raking in about $40 million a month so you don;t have to incur the
cost to upgrade your infrastructure!!! Why do all these games seem to
have the same CEO??? >> Stay informed about: SWG to WoW |

Fallout Online, if it maintained the Turn Based nature of the original games
would probably drag me away from SWG... At least for a little while.
