Of the two currently available, the original Spy Hunter is the better game
in my opinion. I'm not alone in this belief--on GameFaqs, the PS2 version
of Spy Hunter scores an 83% aggregate; Spy Hunter 2 (again, the PS2 version)
scores 60%. If you can't pass the test for the first level of the first
game, however, you might as well forget about it. The levels don't get any
easier (in either game) from there on out. It definitely takes time to
figure out what each level's objectives are, and you'll have to play them
over and over before you get it right (which was why I enjoyed the game. Of
course, I also enjoyed Stuntman for the same reason...).
As for the upcoming Spy Hunter: Nowhere to Run (which I've played/am
playing), it is a combination of driving/combat with third-person
shooting/combat. The driving portion isn't much different than it was in
the first two Spy Hunter console games. It has some interesting combo
fighting moves, challenges (which let you unlock mini-game type contests)
and a storyline with voice acting/motion capture from The Rock. If I were
you, however, I don't think I'd wait for the third game to come
out...especially if you just want vehicle combat.
Do you have a PSP or an Xbox 360? If you like vehicle combat, such as
Twisted Metal, you might like the PSP version. And Full Auto for the 360,
and soon the PS3, combines driving with shooting. But there aren't a lot of
other games in the genre that were any good--Motor Mayhem and Crash Tag Team
Racing were pretty lame, for example. Maybe try something like Roadkill
(with a Twisted Metal meets GTA vibe)? Or, believe it or not, Starsky &
Hutch--it had a driving/shooting mix that was fun in an arcade-style way.
Actually, I think Jak X: Combat Racing would be your best bet. While not as
dark as Twisted Metal, the racing is good and the weapons are satisfying.
