I know SLI is incompatible with CrossFire, so that's not what this is
about.

I've realized I've got quite a bit of money saved up, so I wanted to
splurge a little on a video card. Then I thought maybe I should
upgrade my parents' video cards, for when the family gets together to
play Unreal.

But I hate to waste the brand new card I just put in my dad's because
his old one was acting up. It's an ATI x1550.

I've been running two cards in my system to support three monitors;
only one is plugged into the card where my games play.

However this falls out, I'm going to have one computer running a
GeForce card next to an ATI card. Does this work? Do the drivers
coexist with each other?
