Here's what happens, depending on how I run the signal from my HD TiVo
to my Sony Bravia 40" TV:
When I run the signal via HDMI, the TV (HD Sony Bravia) has a tough
time recognizing when the picture has changed from 16:9 to 4:3 (which
is every time I use the TiVo's menu). Therefore, every time I start a
4:3 show, I have to hit the Aspect/Wide button on my remote 4 times to
get the TV to cycle through "Full" (16x9), then Zoom, then Wide Zoom,
then back to "Normal" (4x3).
However, when I run the same signal via composite cables, the HD Sony
Bravia immediately recognizes what type of signal it's receiving and
adjusts itself accordingly.
This wouldn't be such a pain if the TV had three different composite
inputs, but it only has two. I have two DVD players and the TiVo HD,
and whichever of the three devices I hook up via HDMI ends up causing
problems with certain signals.
(In fact, my slightly fuzzy memory of playing certain DVDs via the
HDMI cable is that "Normal" (4x3) wasn't even listed as one of the
TV's choices. No amount of cycling through the TV's aspect ratios
would help.)
What I've done is bought a 3-way AV switch so that I can use composite
cables for every TV input, and the HDMI cable(s) I've bought are just
sitting in storage, presumably with no hope of parole.
By my count, I've got 20 cables (5 for each of the 3 devices running
to the AV switch, then 5 from the AV switch to the TV) running around
back there (plus the AC adaptor for the AV swtich) when I feel like I
should only have 11 (5 for 2 devices, plus a single HDMI cable.)
Is there anything I'm missing here? Is this a well-known "bug?" --
with Sony or with many brands of TV?
Are HDMI cables simply a hassle to use with a Sony -- with enough
usability problems that customers are better off just putting up with
the bundles of wires that come with composite cables and AV switches? >> Stay informed about: Running TiVo to my (Sony Bravia) HDTV with composite vs. H.. |

If it's like my Sony Wega, "Normal" is not available for 720p and 1080i
signals.

My TiVo S3 to Sony Wega (KDF-60XS955) HDMI connection works fine. So the
problem is (1) your TiVo or TV video settings, (2) a difference between the
TiVo S3 and TiVo HD or (3) a Bravia hardware problem or design limitation
not present in my Wega. If it's Bravia design I feel your pain and I'm glad
I have a Wega.
For what it's worth here are my video settings:
TiVo S3 Aspect (button) = Full (I never intentionally change this)
TiVo S3 Screen Menu: TV Aspect Ratio = 16:9, Video Output Format = Native
Sony Screen Menu: Wide Mode = Normal (but TV uses Full Mode for 720p & 1080i
signals), 4:3 Default = Off (but Normal should also work)
The only annoyance is that I have to use my Sony (not TiVo!) remote to
switch to Zoom for 4:3 letterbox and back to Normal when I'm done with
letterbox.
My Sony did have a hardware problem that affected only my HDMI connection,
but it was a different problem.
Hope this helps (but if the problem is in your Bravia's design I know it
won't!). >> Stay informed about: Running TiVo to my (Sony Bravia) HDTV with composite vs. H.. |

These settings also seem to work for my TiVo input but I don't know what
they'll do for input from your DVD players:
Sony Screen Menu: Wide Mode = Full (leave fixed at this value)
TiVo Video Menu: TV Aspect Ratio = 16:9, Video Output Format = 1080i Fixed
TiVo Aspect button = Zoom for 4:3 letterbox, Panel for all else
This should work unless your TiVo HD differs from my TiVo S3. >> Stay informed about: Running TiVo to my (Sony Bravia) HDTV with composite vs. H.. |
