I originally posted this to VN / MLF, but since I haven't posted here
in quite a while, I thought I'd share it and spark some good
discussion here on agdaoc
Happy Thanksgiving to all.
___________________________________________________
What in the world has happened to our game?
I started out nearly 3 years ago... couldn't tell you when and that's
not really important to this post. I was playing games like Diablo II
and pretty much hating it, dealing with a pack of 10 year olds who
cussed like sailors, scammed, cheated, stole, etc.
Then someone pointed me to this game.
Amazing! It was so new and so refreshing. The whole 3D environment,
the sounds, (I love the mood that the in-game music sets) it was so
nice.
I remember standing on the portal pad one day with my Thidranki-bound
ranger, waiting for Glasny to come down and send us off to war.
Another ranger came up to me, and asked to see my armor and weapons. I
showed him in the trade window, wary that this was some type of scam
or attempted rip-off. He looks over my merchant gear and tells me I
need better stuff... and to wait here. Then he goes up to the vault
and returns and hands me almost a full suit of better armor, some
rings, bracers, cloak, etc. He basically decked me out in what turned
out to be great stuff for that level. Didn't ask for a copper. He told
me good luck, good hunting, gave me a /cheer and took off. I was
speechless. How generous... how GREAT this game is. What benefitted
me, benefitted our realm and he showed that people in DAoC are not
only generous, but amazingly friendly.
On another day not long afterwards, I passed a hero in the passageway
leading to Tir Na Nog, and he stopped, beckoned me, and passed me 100g
for no reason at all. His name was Zuum, and we chatted a while and I
told him how useful that sum would be to a lowbie such as myself. He
told me he got a kick out of passing people money to use to better
themselves in the game. Along the way I met several others who were
just like that, and the game money thing was never an issue... Hibs
took care of Hibs always. As I grew in levels and accumulated more
game coin myself, I passed along the generosity of Zuum when possible
to others lower and newer than myself.
We used to have a guy from Denmark named Cell. This person was one of
the most amazing people I've met in DAoC. Completely selflessly, Cell
would sit on the rock in Mag Mell for HOURS at a time, giving level 50
DA/DS to all the new players out in the lawn beating up on skeletons.
He took on that role on his own inititative, and helped countless
numbers of you Hibs who are 50 now, get there.
I've given these 3 examples of friendliness and kindness to set the
stage for what I'm about to say.
With the release of ToA this game has gone to pure TOS.
I've never before seen so much greed and hoarding as I see today. To
compete on the current DAoC battlefield you *must* have artifacts and
ML abilities, this is fact. The player housing Consignment Merchants
play a part in the ruin of the game, as they allow people to ask
outrageous, sometimes ridiculous prices for gear... and leave it there
until they get it. We have people going out on artifact raids who
simply don't need the drop, but roll for it anyway... why? Greed. They
compete with people who might actually (God forbid!) USE the item and
sell it for asinine prices, thus raising the price for everyone in the
game.
I often hear people asking "Oh you got Whatever 3/3 scroll? How much
do you want for it?" and the person will respond with "Let me check
Market Explorer and see what it's worth." which is a crock because
people list the same item in such a wide range of prices it's not even
funny. I've seen some things listed for 1 plat here and the same item
10 gold over there. These are kids, presumably the same little TOS
that hoarde SOJs on Diablo II and like to see who can collect the most
"stuff" to feel superior.
20 PLAT for a scroll? 50 PLAT for a drop item? These people obviously
have no concept of how far a plat piece used to go. New people
entering the game will eventually just /quit when they see the height
of the mountain they need to scale to get to a level where they can
compete on the battlefield. There si so much great gear sitting in
player housing right now that if it were all dispensed to everyone in
the realm, we'd be unstoppable. I myself price scrolls from 1g to 10g
in most cases and I'll ask for a couple hundred for the rarer 3/3s but
never would I even think of asking for platinum. And I'll typically
sell rarer scrolls in a trade window only, because if I put it on my
CM cheap, some greedy creep will buy it from me and put it on HIS CM
for 15 times the price.
Stop the hoarding. Stop being loot and arti whores. Spread around the
generosity of Zuum and let's get this game back to being enjoyable,
not an extension of our collective darker natures. Here's a
challenge... go out today and find someone in your realm who needs
something and GIVE IT TO THEM FREE. No strings, no obligations, no
favors in return.... just hook someone up. And ***REFUSE*** to pay
these asinine prices. There is only one reason in the world why Mad
Tales 3/3 sells for 20 plat... because some people are too lazy to
farm it on their own and are willing to PAY it. AND YOU KNOW THESE
PEOPLE WHO STARTED FORKING OUT HUGE AMOUNTS OF GAME CURRENCY FOR ITEMS
ARE THE SAME MORONS WHO *BUY* THEIR PLAT OFF EBAY WITH THEIR PARENTS'
CREDIT CARD. The regular people who hunt and salvage and do the normal
things people do to earn coin in the game aren't the ones who set
these prices so high.
If everyone collectively took a stand and said NO MORE, the prices of
things would plummet and we could all get on with the game. Next time
you ask someone how much and they tell you some astronomical figure,
tell them to take a hike. Pretty soon they'll get the picture. But it
has to be done universally, i.e. if a few still agree to continue
paying it, the price will stay sky high.

hi dana, hi ng!
thnx for posting your opinion in this ng as well!
i 100% agree to your post, the game seems to have lost most of itīs
community-spirit, /as ist filled up with "have *itemofchoice* for >15PLAT to
sell" etc, i almost feel as a criminal if i donate some gold or items to
low-lvl-chars or sell some scrolls/items for much less money than offered in
housingzone...
the discussion will lead to "you are only jealous, because we did get the
scroll/item/whatever and you didnīt!" or "hehe, you are complaning about the
price? if you canīt afford this, stfu"...i experienced all this already in
game, and i really donīt understand
seems that the"commercial" part of item/money-selling ingame and on ebay is
a much bigger fun (or job) for some players than the "original" intention,
to play with each other and have some fun.
anyway, thank you again for your posting, you exactly point out my thoughts
there!

I do recall, when I started DAOC, experiencing the same generosity and
community. Maybe because I play on the coop server, I see more of the
greed you describe. Though, I still see alot of the quest and group
sharing for arties and scrolls in my experience in TOA. I've always
crafted for my guidies at cost for my makes. And I spell craft the
items for free for my guildies. I used to buff in lowbie zones with
my
theurgist, then Mythic NERFED my earth theurgist to the point, I
stopped playing
her.
I don't play on a RvR server now because I won't run bugged MLs and
camp arties/scrolls for days on end to compete. I reckon, I'll give
mythic one more chance with catacombs before I /quit for good. (I
haven't forgotten TOA and it's bugs and item nerfs...) >> Stay informed about: The Ruination of DAoC (long) |

My pleasure.
If you or anyone else would like to read the discussion that followed
this posting on VN here's the link. Some good points were made on
both sides of the issue.

Add to that, we have a drastic radaring problem on MLF.
And recently it has come to light that many of our "elite" RvR players
regularly share accounts with their friends from enemy realms.

I feel your pain. I have played DAoC pretty much daily from a month after
it came out, until this spring when I moved to City of Heroes. I still
stop by from time to time to rouse my L50 paladin in Darkness Falls and
resurrect some fallen or clear some dangerous path before I log off again.
But the spark is gone.
I think there is a law of nature at work here. To put it flippantly:
"Every MMORPG will eventually become EverQuest." Including EQ itself, of
course, but I mean it literally: An ever-lasting quest. The key to keeping
the customers is to create desires that cannot be fulfilled in a
lifetime. (Sounds familiar from the real world, does it not?) For a tree
to grow high, it needs deep roots. The roots of a MMORPG are the money
sinks: Housing, crafted goods, artifacts. Things that take a lot of time
to achieve. People will complain, indeed EQ has some of the whiniest
players around, but you will still need to pry the keyboard from their
cold dead fingers.
As long as everyone is trapped in desires that are just barely out of
reach, they have no time for each other and no time to have fun. But they
very strongly expect to have fun in the future some time, when they reach
their goals. Of course, by then there are new goals introduced by some new
patch or expansion, and you will be just as dissatisfied and just as
convinced that you will be happy in the future.

And now it appears we've been flooded on most servers with
plat-farming bots from Asia.

My husband and I and a couple of friends met these "bots" in CM tonight on
Hib - Pellinor....very odd indeed. All 50, all in the startup guild, and
only one spoke to us after we attempted several times to get them to stop
hitting every mob that we pulled. All he/she/it said was 'bai bai' as they
moved on to the next room. But they still kept coming back and forth as if
they were clueless and lost.
Appealed, and was told that it would be investigated. Then we went to eat
dinner and when we came back they were still there, and still doing the same
thing all through the mines to everyone there. Appealed again, along with
several others, and suddenly they were gone. Very irritating, when some
folks are just trying to play and have fun and there's someone else just as
determined to ruin your playing as you are to enjoy yourself.
This was obviously only one or two actual players, and the rest were on auto
follow, and they moved through so quickly that it's amazing that they even
had time to pick up their 'spoils'.
