I think swords/maces are better for levelling for two reasons:

1) Backstab really takes off when you have Improved Backstab,
Opportunity and Lethality. Those three talents off a HUGE boost to your
backstab damage, but you can't take them all until level 42 (needs 33
talent points spent).

2) For solo play, daggers are a much slower way to play. You spend a lot
of time gouging opponents and then waiting 5 seconds before
backstabbing. It's very effective - you do a lot of damage and don't get
hit a lot - but you can kill things easily enough and a lot quicker with
Cheapshot, SS, SS, SS, Eviscerate with a sword, so why not do so?

Daggers shine in PvP (where you can get behind someone using your player
skills, rather than having to stun them), and in group PvE (where you
can let a tank hold aggro and backstab at will).

Cheers!
