Even without an account TiVos can still connect to the servers. They
have to be able to connect just to check account status. If they
can't connect at all, which is what he's described, then it is a
network issue before they even reach the servers.
I'm a geek, so my instinct would be to use Ethereal to monitor the
traffic coming from the TiVo and see what IP/ports it is trying to
connect to and if there is any response at all. And then try the same
IP/ports from a PC just to see if it can connect.
If possible you could even use Ethereal to monitor each network
segment to make sure the traffic is at least getting past the router
to your broadband connection.
