I agree, and I keep meaning to pick up the Saturn port of the 3DO game
sometime just to see what it was like. The first Genesis game is a
single player race with hand drawn characters and software scaling for
the sprites (severly limited in framerate). The second Genesis game is
more of the same, but with a crucial (for me) addition, two player split
screen. The third game is an ugly digitized mess of "live actors" with
more weapons and bikes to buy over the second game, but severely lacking
in art quality.

The Sega CD game is the one to get if you like the story and cutscene
dialog of the 3DO game (I'm pretty sure it's the exact same one), and
the 1st Genesis game's graphics. EA opted to not use the hardware
scaling and rotation capabilities which made effects in Batman Returns
and the Core 3D Sega CD games so famous, and instead simply ported the
Genesis cart and added music and cutscenes. Consider it a "directors
cut" DVD version of the VHS original.
