Alright, for some reason, Rise of Nations will not work for me. I
uninstalled it from my computer a while back and since then it won't
auto play when I put the disc in so I can begin installation.
Furthermore, when I open up the disc and try to execute the program
manually it gives an error message:

translated_string.xml not loaded. File missing?

and then

internal_string.xml not loaded. File missing?

There's no hint of Rise of Nations left on my system, I've checked time
and time again, so there's no way to re-install it or anything as
mundane as that. Anyone have any clue on how to fix this problem? It's
been nagging me for some time now, so if anybody has a suggestion,
please I'd love to hear it. I was told by a few others indirectly to
install some MS 4 pack of some kind after removing all forms msxml on
the "Add or Remove Programs" list since, according to them, there's
some kind of file conflict or corruption going on. Or, they tell me to
re-install it...which, again, isn't much of an option for me. Somebody
please help, it has a lot to do with the principle of the matter now,
not just my wanting to play the game.

Have you tried searching through your registry. Sometimes when you uninstall
a game the registry entries are left behind and sometimes this stops the game
from being re-installed at a later time.

You could always try a manual install.

Create a folder on the desktop, open the cd and copy all the files on the cd
into that folder. Then run the installation from there. It sometimes works.

Also try setting the ronsetup.exe compatability to Windows 98. (right-click
>> Properties >> Compatability Tab >> Select Windows 98 on the list)

I had tried to take all the files off the CD and onto my computer
several times, but it never seemed to make a difference. However, I
hadn't thought of running the executable file in compatibility mode.
When I did that, it seemed to work. There were a few error messages
that came up during installation, including one that had to do with an
issue in installing Direct X. Yet, when I started it up after the
installation, everything seemed to run well. Thanks for your help
everyone, I've been trying to get this thing to work since before
Christmas. Even though those errors came up, the game installed and
seems to have no problem. Again, thanks for the help, I appreciate it.

Hi Nick990,

The following applies to most games in general, and not just to the games that
may be listed in the KB Article refered to in this post.

SYMPTOMS:

When you start or play any one of the games that is listed in the "Applies to" section, you may experience one or more of the
following symptoms:

..The game stops responding.
..The game quits unexpectedly.
..The computer restarts unexpectedly.
..The game encounters an error and needs to close

Additionally, you may receive the following error message after you receive the Gathering Exception Data dialog box:
<Game Name>has encountered a problem and needs to close.

RESOLUTION:

Method 1: Restart your computer by using a clean boot procedure
Method 2: Remove and Reinstall the Game
Method 3: Adjust graphics hardware acceleration
Method 4: Disable AGP Texturing in the DirectX Diagnostic tool
Method 5: Temporarily disable the sound card in Windows
Method 6: Lower sound acceleration
Method 7 : Download and install the most recent version of DirectX
Method 8: Update your video driver
Method 9: Update your sound driver
Method 10: Scan your computer for viruses
Method 11: Remove spyware
Method 12: Install the latest VIA chipset drivers
Method 13: Create a new user account in Windows XP
Method 14: Change the compatibility setting
