Archived from groups: rec>games>computer>ultima>series (more info?)

So what's the popular way of ripping Ultima music? How were those
MIDIs found in various places over the years made? Did someone sit at
a MIDI keyboard and perform them all from memory? Or did someone
manage to capture the output to the sound card while playing the game?
OR was there a direct hack to the game, and the music read from the
binary data?
I find the MIDI music pretty awful sometimes, compared to the
MT32 and OPL versions. I'm especially thinking of the Tenebrae music
to Ultima 8. DosBox makes method 2 (capturing the output while
playing) pretty easy, but it's more crude and laborious than hacking
the music code. Does anyone do #3? With my limited knowledge of
assembly and vast knowledge of C I've been able to hack very little.
