I'm returning to Crawl after a very long break. The difficulty I'm
currently having is working out which weapons are best. I'm playing a
Minotaur Berserker. A few question below in no particular order:

1. Is this worth buying?

The +1,+10 battleaxe of If Fyni

A large axe with a double-headed blade.

Damage rating: 17
Accuracy rating: -2
Base attack delay: 180%

It affects your evasion (+4).

This weapon is best used by the strong.
It is a two handed weapon.
It falls into the 'axes' category.
It weighs around 20.0 aum.


My current weapon is a +2,+2 war axe (I'm trying to focus on axes at
the moment).

2. Skills currently as follows:

You have 253 points of unallocated experience.

a + Fighting Skill 7 (Cool
b + Axes Skill 12 (7)
c + Polearms Skill 1 (1)

d + Throwing Skill 2 (Cool

e + Armour Skill 5 (2)
f + Dodging Skill 3 (4)

g + Unarmed Combat Skill 3 (7)

What's with the unallocated experience?

3. Severely curtailed char dump below:

Is there anything here I should worry about? Also, I have 8 spell
levels left. Can Minotaur Berserkers use magic? Won't Trog get angry?

4. Finally, what's the ecumenical temple for? I'm assuming it's just
there in case I want to convert. Do I want to convert or it Trog fine
for the time being?

Oh god, yes.

The battleaxe is much much better.

When you attack, cast a spell, or do anything that will exercise a
skill, the skill points will be used to train and rise that skill.

Minotaurs CAN use magic- It's just really hard and it'll take a while.
However, learning or casting a spell will make Trog really angry, and
you shouldnt' do it unless you want to renounce your religion the hard
way.

Yes, for that, and to stash items you may use in the future. Trog's ok,
just make sure you gather enough piety for the endgame, where the
enemies usually are undead and don't leave corpses, ergo: no piety.

Yes!!!! No really, a solid damage bonus, a plus to EV and no ill
effects. Smone day you might switch this for a highly enchanted vorpal
one, but right now it's great.

maybe turn it off to give Fighting a break

turn it off.

are you a heavy- or light armour guy? Stick to one to avoid skill
dilution (those passive skills train really slowly IME).

maybe train it a bit.

As Ichy Lich said, every time you use a skill, you get a chance to
transfer XP from the unallocated skill pool to that skill, eventually
rising it.

You should decide if you go for heavy or light armour. Minotaurs are
equally good in both skills. Oh, and what are your resistances?

Yes, even Minotaurs can learn magic in time; but not until you've read
enough scrolls to get at least one level of Spellcating.

Yes. Fireballs, trolls, exhauistion, ....

And, as Icy Lich said, as a base camp. No monsters are ever generated
there.

Leaving Trog will also make him quite angry, so only try to convert if
you know you can survive it and the benefit outweighs the risk; with
Trog that means "unless you are Erik".

I think I'm a heavy armour guy? I have a nice +1 plate mail... Is
there any advantage in being a light armour guy?

I've got a couple more questions:

1. Went through the Orcish Mines to the Elven Halls, but got beaten
back. Elves are pretty tough so I thought I'd leave them for later.
Is that a good idea?

2. I now have 2 nice axes, but am using If Fyni on the assumption that
it's better (still having difficulty working out how much damage
weapons do).

3. Having trouble working out which rings to wear. Any advice?
