Hi,

Im probably one of the more silent members of this excellent forum. I
was wondering if there is a need for Cartridge Cases I will be getting
some machinery which should enable me to produce cases quite cheaply. I
noticed sometime ago that these were getting scarce and even John
Dondzilla had starting using colecovision cases. If I can produce cheap
cases then I think this will be my small contribution to keeping the
Vectrex alive! Im not in this to make a profit!!! The machinery Ive
purchased cost £14000 so I think Id have to sell a lot of cases before
I broke even. Please pass on your comments.

Thanks

Andy

Andy,
the only thing that Sean's cartridges are lacking is the locking tabs.
Otherwise it is a perfect reproduction of the original. And he just
produced a large batch.

Before this event, there was a long thread here last year (IIRC) about
feasibility of someone else making repro carts. With locking tabs. It
was discovered that in order to have the locking tabs, we needed to use
a sliding mold. That is much more expensive that a plain 2-piece mold.
With the estimated quantities of Vectrex carts to be made it didn't
make much sense to go through all that expense (especially since Sean's
cartridges are very good).

So, it is not the injection molding machine we were lacking. The large
expense would be in the tooling required.

If you are a die maker who can produce sliding molds and are willing to
donate your time and materials, then by all means, make a parfect repro
cart!

The cartridge case production was answered with a new order via Sean's mold
and production source.

But I am sure we would all like to have an alternate case source. What
could you do?

John has always used hacked intellivision carts.

Not sure what ABS is? But I'm sure we could use it if you wanted. And
yes we use solid blocks so we dont have to make an expensive dye. As
for the machine, ROLAND.

Yes one of the Modela high end range I think. And as for tooling marks
if you use an extremely thin drill bit then you should have an
extremely good finish. As for clear cases, i have no idea, we shall
have to wait and see! Finally can anyone mail me the cost of the
reproduction cases at present? I want to get some figures worked out. I
will be away in Turkey from 17th to 25th so if I dont answer any
emails/questions then please dont feel I'm being ignorant I will answer
all that people send me, and any questions as well.

Thanks

Andy

Thanks for the details regarding the cost as for the cartridge size
probably 15cm across by 30cm long.

Andy, AAMOI what machine are you using to make these ?

So, you're starting off with solid blocks of ABS ?

Nope I will be laser scannning the cases into a computer, changing the
design to how anyone wants it and then milling the cases.

ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) the type of plastic the originals are
made from. It's used for all kinds of enclosures etc.

Isn't it going to be very slow making them like this ? + won't you get a
degree of 'tooling marks' on the finished product (especially if it's clear)
?

One of the MODELA models ?

Blimey I have opened a real can of worms!!!! Yes im in the UK. The
process works by first scanning any object you want with a seperate
scanner which can be saved out and edited in a cad/cam package. When
you are happy with the end product you save it and then load it into
the milling software, which controls a seperate milling machine. So the
laser and milling system are seperate machinery. And yes you could
produce a Lightpen and a new controller case if you wanted!

So what kind of file does the Roland take for the machine work? Do you need
this file or can you take and AutoCAD original and work from it?

Put a light pen in the scanner, I've always wanted one with a clear case Smile
(like the mythical prototype)

A new controller or 3D imager case would be good too.

Are you in the UK ?

Any chance you can send me a sample of something produced on the machine ?

.........sorry for all the questions (I love this stuff)

Is the laser scanner built into the miller, or is it a separate machine ?

So an object placed into the scanner comes out at the PC end as a 3D CAD
drawing with very good accuracy ?

BTW what are you using the equipment for at the moment ?
