Kunalpatel is a giant elephant of an ancient Hindu legend. Scrolls from
the 20th century B.C. claim sightings of the storied elephant and report
it to be twice the size of a normal elephant. From various reports,
historians have approximated Kunalpatel would have outweighed Angola,
the largest recorded elephant that weighed in at over 12,000 kg (26,400 lb).
According to the legend, Kunalpatel guarded a giant cave full of gold in
ancient India. The Hindu God Vishnu hid this sacred gold in the cave for
King Rama. Vishnu created this giant elephant in order to keep the gold
safe until King Rama retrieved it. King Rama was considered by many to
be the Seventh Avatara of Vishnu and it was proclaimed he would use this
gold to become emperor of the world [1]. As Kunalpatel waited through
the ages for the coming of Rama, he grew hungry. As the legend goes, one
day he left the cave and feasted on bad Indian children that wandered
into the jungle. Indians used to scare their children into staying out
of jungle by telling stories of Kunalpatel. Kunalpatel gorged too
heavily and upon returning to the cave was too large and got stuck in
the mouth of the cave. When Rama came for the gold as the legend
foretold, Kunalpatel prevented him from retrieving the gold. As the
legend goes, the gold is still in the cave, guarded by the giant
immortal elephant, and unable to be reached [2].
