My first main is a warrior. I still play him from time to time,
but I got a bit tired of him and rolled a warlock. As I have been
leveling my warlock, when I come across others battling mobs, I
will pretty much always stop and help out warriors. I actually
try to help everyone that I can, but often times that just entails
throwing a couple of DoTs an moving on, unless the person is really
jammed up. But warriors always get as much help as I can give
them, because I know what it is like to solo a warrior. Especially
a warrior dealing with adds.

Who are you most and least likely to help out if it looks like they
need it?

Oh and another thing that I have experienced since I have been
playing a warlock. Random whisper, "Can you find some people around
there and Summon me please?" No. I can't. *You* find some people
around here and ask them, and *then* I guess I'd summon you. I
bet mages get more requests like this than warlocks do.

I pretty much help anyone I see. Strange but I always make sure I help the
alliance. I played alliance for 1 year and then switched to horde. For
some reaon I can't play alliance anymore but I always make sure I help the
alliance. Quite strange indeed.

Mages do complain that they are always getting whispers for food/water etc.
I've only recieved a few requests and I make sure I give them their supper.
I'm not really bother with the requests.

I help horde players getting ganked by alliance. And when I say
ganked, I mean they have no chance of putting up a defense against
either a higher level player or a group of alliance. I once corpse
camped a group of 3 alliance players who had been corpse camping a
guildy.

As far as the warlock summons, happens all the time, and I usually
ignore them. Some are more rediculous than others, such as a hunter
in Zangarmarsh asking for a summon to Nagrand, or a shaman in the
Barrens asking for a summon to Ashenvale. For the time being,
Netherstorm is a refuge, as warlock summons do not work there. 2.4
however is supposed to change that.

My main problem with being asked to summon is sometimes there just
aren't people around, or I am at a place that it will take me a while
to get back to a place with other players in order to summon. I mean,
if I am in the middle of a large zone, why should I have to drop what
I am doing, find 2 other players who will probably insist comes at the
expense of me traveling to them, just because someone else doesn't
want to take the time to make the trip themselves? Chances are, by
the time I get people together, they could have made the trip
themselves. I see this constantly in the Trade channel. People
looking for a port from Org to UC, or vice versa, who spend more time
looking for a port than it would take to get there. One time I event
tried it, when I saw someone asking for a port, I ran out of the city,
got on the zep, flew to UC, got off and ran into UC only to see the
same player in Trade asking for the same port.

I am not a taxi. I am a warlock, and I use summon to my own benefit.
I.e., I need a replacement for someone who dropped out of my instance
run, that gets you a summon. I get a group for a group quest and I
want to get done quickly but 1 member is far away, that gets you a
summon. Using my time to save your own time does not get you a
summon.

Low level guildies looking to travel to shattrath also get a summon.

Guilty as charged, m'lud. I always offer 5g for a summon, though, and
I always tip the helpers 1g each as well. I got my 55 warrior summoned
to Hellfire Peninsula this way to learn blacksmith >300, and I did
find one of the assists myself (a guildie!)

Heh, almost forgot about lock boxes on my rogue. I routinely open lock
boxes for guild members, even getting them in the mail for picking. I
really don't mind. Usually on my server, trade channel has a few
people looking for rogues to pick locks. The only thing that annoys me
about that is they never tell what city they are in, so if you want to
know you gotta click on their name in the chat window. If someone is
close by I don't mind opening a box for them. I never ask for any fees
but quite often I get tips. Occasionally if I'm standing around close
to the bank or a mailbox I get a whisper of "can you open xxx lock box
for me?" My answer is almost always "sure"....the thing that really
gets to me on my rogue (lvl 70 with full Gladiator set and almost all
epics) is often I'm standing around in SW waiting for a BG to pop and
some low lvl whispers "can you run me through deadmines???
PLEASE???"...sorry, waiting for a battleground.....

My main is a Holy Paladin - my first instinct when anyone looks like
they're in trouble is to always charge in and start healing left and
right.

I started my first new character in about 8 months recently - an
Undead Mage who's level 29 now. I've been spending so much time with
my Paladin, it feels weird to play a char that can't heal.

But then I remember that she can Sheep and Frost Nova. Smile She groups
quite a bit, and always hands out drinks and food. Hey, it's free for
me to make, takes only a few seconds, and at my level, perhaps this is
my party-mate's first character, and they don't have a lot of money -
free food for one gaming session might help.

At lvl 29, from what I'm hearing, I guess I should feel lucky that's
she's never been asked to make food so far.

I do find it very cute how people want to "pay back" a kindness, even
when, IMO, the game should be about just helping folks. Last night my
Mage explained fishing to a Warlock who asked for help. She thanked
me, I saw her make a potion, then she opened up a Trade window, and
gave me an Elixir of Minor Fortitude.

The people I really want to help are the ones who never ask for help,
and, in fact, decline the offer of a high-level character's help
because they want to try a quest on their own. Kind of ironic that the
people I most want to help are the same people most likely to refuse
said help.

I never realized that people will just open a Trade window with a
stranger Mage or Rogue and demand water, or stick a lockbox in the
window without so much as saying a word. That's reprehensible. I think
the whole "anonymity of the Internet" excuse only goes so far; one
must really have truly, truly atrocious manners in the first place to
try to pull stunts like that.

My Paladin was Prot from levels 44-70, so believe me when I say I
understand your frustration - folks coming to "save" me when they saw
multiple mobs on me (the fact that I wasn't running away should have
been a clue that I was OK). I'd have to keep reminding myself that it
was just a kind person who'd noticed another character, felt that they
were in trouble, and took the time out of their own playtime to come
and help.

Come on now. Would you rather that someone just stood there and
watched you die?

I am most likely to help if I see a random player -- either side -- trying
to handle multiple mobs and looking like they're fighting a losing battle.
I hesitate if they appear to be holding their own, because I find that it
really bugs **me** if I'm killing a mob and someone helps when I obviously
don't need assistance. If I've gotten a bunch of adds, that's a different
story, but I'd still rather die once in the attempt than be treated like I
couldn't possibly have done it alone.

I help Horde whenever I can, unless it's a Hordie that just /spit, /rude or
/taunt at me for no reason other than the fact that I'm Alliance.

I don't help players that say "Would you help me lvl?" It's so completely
selfish. I'm supposed to set aside my desire to play my game my way to help
them? I don't think so. I also tend to not share quests anymore. I used
to, but it backfired so many times that I just pretend I don't notice the
whisper. I will group with someone who already has the quest, but I've
found that those asking that I share a quest are just too lazy or
inefficient to find the quest-givers themselves.

There are a few names that pop in gen chat or the trade channel on a
frequent basis calling names, being obnoxious, spamming guild invites --
those I don't help. Ever.

I understand what you're saying; anyone who would take a look for half
a second would obviously be able to tell that you're fine. I'm much
better now in the sense that I look and assess the situation, but for
the longest time, whenever my Paladin would see someone with anything
less than a 100% health bar, his automatic, knee-jerk reaction was to
charge over and start healing.

I don't recall this ever happening in PvE (my server type), but I do
know that one time in a BG someone stood there and watched me die. It
infuriated me, especially because the reason I died was because I was
OOM healing everyone else, and had none left for me, so to see one of
my heal-ees taking off was a real kick in the teeth.

I'll stop and help preists. Maybe because when I started MMO's it was
with a cleric in Everquest. Got him his epic and still miss him from
time to time. If anyone needed a hand in EQ it was clerics, especially
pre the later expansions

I only help if it looks like they are in deep trouble and can't get out.
I hate it when I'm questing/grinding with my Paladin or Druid and
someone comes in and kills the mobs for me just because they THINK I
couldn't handle that much.
So I pretty much only come to the rescue when they are about to go down
or start running away. If asked I always help.

Tell them this. I even have a macro for it. Some give up right away,
others will try to persuade you to do it for more than 10 minutes Wink. I
avoid standing around in Stormwind now, as there is always someone who
couldn't find a mage nearby and wants a free port. Heck, I even got
requests from low levels in Goldshire that wanted to be ported to
Stormwind because they couldn't find the way.

When I'm out questing I sometimes help others without being asked.
Typically I will notice when a player is somewhat low for the zone and
I'll keep an eye on them while I'm in the vicinity. If it looks like
they are in a situation where they are likely to go down, I usually
jump in and help. Faction doesn't matter to me (PvE server) as to when
I help. We are all just playing a game.

My mage sometimes gets requests for food or water. If it's a polite
request, I don't mind doing it. Sometimes I get rude requests like
suddenly getting a trade window opened and the character says "need
water" or the like. These are the ones that get ignored. I once saw a
request in general channel "I need 4 more kills to finish quest and
I'm out of water. Any mage near that can help?" I promptly traveled a
hundred yards or so to where he was and gave him a couple stacks of
water. I did it simply because I know what a pain in the rear it is to
leave a quest unfinished to travel back to town to get supplies....

On my Priest and Mage, I usually throw out my buffs to anyone I pass.
And, if someone is fleeing for their life I usually intervene.

As far as food/water/biscuits/ports, if ppl ask politely I freely give
out food/water. When I'm on my Priest, I always buff first then ask
if I can *buy* water - this often gets water for free. I hate when
ppl randomly say "water!" to my Mage or open trade without saying
anything (unless it's a Raid of course). Now, in BGs I think there's
a small bit of "team" obligation though I'd still like to be asked
nicely AND BUFFED ffs! My Mage is Alliance and I can't understand why
some ppl think it's ok for me to spend silver to make biscuits for
them but they can't give me their free buff. Ports... I usually say
1G, not so much to pay for the Rune, more for the inconvenience of
partying & finding them. Every once in awhile I'm accosted by some
n00b who thinks I should provide this service for free.

I never could understand the whole water thing. Maybe its because I
play a warlock, maybe its because my alts get played rarely. But I
always just buy water from a vendor. It accomplishes the same goal,
but this way I already have water the next time I log in. I don't
have to waste time everytime I play looking for a nice mage to make me
water.

On top of that, since my warlock rarely has to drink, its great having
spare water when in a PUG and your healer forgot to grab water and you
have no mage. I can go without water if I need to, as I only drink
when I have to wait for everyone else anyway, and I am rarely low on
mana.

I know, the cost builds up over time, but I feel the time saved more
than makes up for it.

"I never could understand the whole water thing. "

Really just a matter of math. On my Priest, I definitely carry my own
water, plus I have the Sporeggar frond. So, I'm never empty handed.
However, many mages will give you 10 gold worth of water for 1 gold.
So if I'm gonna be questing for a few hours, it makes good financial
sense. Moreover, I don't travel to another continent to buy mage
water. If there's not someone standing in town then I just wait until
I come across one. When I do, I buff them and politely ask if I can
give them 1G for a stack... usually they give more. Sure beats paying
2.5G for a stack in town.
