I'm finishing an article on Angband for Qercus magazine, and
ideally need to know what the current state of play is for:

central Angband website URL
FTP download address
RISC OS ports
RISC OS maintainer
.....

Well, offhand I'd say Timo's departure has devastated the state of
play in general. I was so depressed when I read his last post, that I
immediately stopped playing at that point. Mr. Pietilä's leaving is
widely percieved as a crushing blow to the spirit of Vanilla Angband,
invoking a profound state of mourning in the larger Roguelike
community. He will be missed. Timo Pietilä is survived by his
squelch patch. Reuters.

Alarming possibility - maybe he got the settings wrong and
accidentally squelched himself?

A.

LOL. Personally I suspect he's taken a temporary sabbatical to bring forth
Timoband, the long-awaited variant with no spellbooks, no artifacts, no ego
items and only ironman mode(*). Locals in Timo's part of the world can
probably hear the "mwa-ha-ha-ha"s booming throughout the surrounding area as
he puts the finishing touches to it.

(*) It will, however, tell you instantly exactly how much damage your
wielded weapon will do against any monster. If your launcher can kill Smaug
with a single shot, you win the game.

I haven't done any work on Angband for a long while, but as best as I know:

The main Angband maintainer is currently Andrew Sidwell, who also
maintains the RISC OS port. http://www.rephial.org is the main (Vanilla)
development site.

The main FTP site used to be clockwork.dementia.org, and then
ftp.thangorodrim.net, but both now appear to be down. The older stuff
seems to be available on ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/games/Angband, but the
newer stuff is a bit scattered. http://angband.oook.cz seems to have
weblinks to the other "live" variants.

As far as I know, there have been two major ports of the game to RISC
OS. The first was by Kevin Bracey, around the 2.7.9 series, the second
(much improved) was by Musus Umbra in 1998 or so. I provided some very
minor help with the latter port and used it as a base to compile a
number of Angband variants in the few years thereafter. Andrew took over
the RISC OS frontend code at some point - he's listed as its current
maintainer if you download the 3.0.9 source and look at src/main-ros.c

I think that many of my RISC OS ports of variants have fallen off the
net - there's not much demand for them these days and they don't seem to
be on sunet. I've got a fairly complete set from the first few years and
would be very happy to send you any if you need them.

HTH,
Tom

There was an (earlier?) port of 2.4.frog-knows.

Yes, that's the one on the sunet.se website Tom Harris mentions
ftp://ftp.sunet.se/pub/games/Angband/Acorn/angband-2.4-frog-knows-acorn.zip

State of the 'Angband' nation??? - Hi, I only really get a view of what I'm working on in Unangband at the moment, and was wondering how the other variants and Angband itself are progressing. To me it seems quite 'quiet' at the moment. NPPAngband is still releasing WIP releases before...

Why do you play Angband? - Why do you play Angband? There was a thread here recently that discussed addiction to Angband (and similar games). This prompted me to ask why I play Angband. I've thought about this and have come up with a few reasons of my own, but would be interested...

[RISC OS,Gum] Can't move in Gumband - I only just got round to trying out the 'new' RISC OS port of Gumband (2.2.3) and I can't move anywhere. :-( None of the number keys work on the keypad or or on the main keyboard, I just get 'wrong key pressed' comic messages. F3 still works to save...
