Just out of curiosity, does a quest's level refer to the level you
should be when attempting it, or to the level that the quest experience
reward is geared toward? In other words, is a level 30 quest meant to be
*done* at 30, or is this level just a measure of what kind of reward you
receive?

I'm sure it has something to do with the difficulty as well, but the
reason I ask is because I noticed last night when I started my new
druid, the first couple of quests you get are already listed as level 2,
and there's no way you can be level 2 yet. But by the time you finish
them, you will be 2 when you turn them in. So I was just wondering...

I think older (pre-TBC) elite quests don't list suggested number.

You can usually do quests that are yellow (within 2 levels of you) without
difficulty. Just because a quest is orange (3-4 levels above you) or red (5
or more levels above you) doesn't mean it's impossible, just increasingly
difficult for you to succeed at. Ultimately, success depends on your gear
level, and your skill with the toon. It's very common for people to complete
orange quests solo. Red quests are probably going to be quite difficult to
solo, as the mobs involved will get alot of crushing blows on you, plus your
attacks will miss / be resisted alot more than usual. However, sometimes
there's a trick to being able to do a certain quest and avoiding combat with
certain difficult mobs, these are the most likely examples of somebody
succeeding at a red quest by themselves. It's not at all impossible to do
group quests solo either, it all depends on the particular mob(s), their
abilities/resistances, and your class skills. Hunters can solo alot of
elites because of their pet. Warlocks can solo them because of fear and
dots. My first warlock solo'ed hogger at level 11, with no voidwalker, just
an imp (hadn't done the VW quest yet). It was difficult, but doable, and
that's where I learned how to dot and fear, dot and fear, lifetap, dot and
fear, dot and fear, healthstone+lifetap, dot and fear, dot and fear,
potion+lifetap, dot and fear, etc etc etc.

Yeah, but it's not so much the difficulty that I worry about, it's more
that I don't want to be doing all my level 25 quests when I'm 24 (as is
the case with my pally right now), then when I hit 25 I'll have some
26-28 to do. I worry that I'm getting ahead of myself.

I'm also trying to get out of hunter mode, because my hunter soloed just
about everything...yellow, orange, red quests, elites, you name it. Now
I need to learn not to go charging in like that anymore. Smile

It usually refers to the highest level of mobs you are likely to face while
doing the quest. If you have to fight say, defias bandits levels 8-9, the
quest would be tagged as a level 9 quest.

The level is the recommended level where you'd have a very good shot at
completing it. Then, of course, there are group quests, which require a
group of people all of the recommended level. It's nice now that the group
quests actually tell you how many players are suggested, ie 2, 3, 5. When
they were just tagged 'elite', you didn't know ahead of time exactly how
hard the mob would be until you tried it. IE when I first did the
"Overmaster Pyron" quest, I tried it with one other person. It was quite
difficult for the two of us, we had to burn all our cooldowns, potions, and
the other fellow even died before we dropped him (but still got credit as he
didn't release yet) that would probably be a "recommended: 3" or 4 quest
nowadays, but back then it just said "elite".

On a side note, quests can be tagged a number of things now:
Group means they recommend doing it in a group
Dungeon means it involves going into an instance (non-raid usually, 5-man)
Raid means you can complete the objectives and/or loot the required items
while in a raid group, this usually means you're going to need a raid group
to complete it
PvP means the quest involves doing something that will flag you for PvP...a
non issue on pvp realms but good warning for those on PvE realms
Daily (new with 2.1.0) means it's a repeatable quest but you can only do it
once per day.

Ah, that makes sense. There are plenty of times I do quests where the
mobs I kill are 3-4 levels lower than what FastQuest says the quest is,
but I guess if I really wanted to look, there are higher level versions
of the mobs too!

One downside of having an add-on like FastQuest is now it makes me try
not to do quests until I am that level, which naturally means I run out
of quests at my level faster. Maybe I shouldn't be so uptight...I just
don't want to always be doing quests that are higher than me.

Sometimes I get group quests that don't list the suggested number of
players....weird.

A lot of times it will be listed as Dungeon even if you just have to go
talk to someone first, i.e. it will eventually lead to the dungeon, or
do something outside the instance (but this still involves elites).

Interesting!

I have a few of those and yes you are right, they generally don't.
Also what class you are can have a HUGE factor on the ability to solo
'old world' elite quests. Quests my poorly equipped warlock did in a
pinch have given my very well equipped mage and priest their share of
grief

Some of them are easy to solo at the suggested level while others are
insanely hard.

Hmmm, that could be the case, but there have been times where I *did*
see the suggested number of players (not in Outland yet, either). Next
time I'll see if there's a pattern to it.
