Archived from groups: alt>games>baldurs-gate (more info?)

Okay, so I'm a late bloomer. I just started BG1 yesterday. I have the
five-disk version simply called Baldur's Gate. I bought it a few years
ago, played a bit, liked it, but then life interfered.

I'm back and I want to play it. It was a blast, as far as I got.

Last year I picked up Baldur's Gate II - The Collection, which includes
Shadows of Amn and Throne of Bhaal.

Someone suggested I load up Tales of the Sword Coast before I finish
BG1. Okay, so that's an entirely different story added on to the one
I'm playing now?

Can anybody list how this game evolved and list the expansion packs (if
I'm using that term correctly)? This will be my first PC RPG: I've
played RPGs on the PS-1 console for years.

Thanks.

Thanks. I think I'll track down a version of Tales of the Sword Coast,
just for good measure.

Baldur's Gate came first, you probably knew that Wink Tales of the Sword
Coast was it's expansion.
Then came Baldur's Gate II , subtitled Shadows of Amn. The expansion for
BGII was named Throne of Bhaal.

Baldur's Gate is first. Baldur's Gate: Tales of the Sword Coast is an
expansion; it makes some changes to the ruleset (including raising the
XP cap) and adds four new areas, but nothing that directly relates to
the plot of the game. Rather, those areas are for side quests.

Then Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn. It's a sequel. You can create a
new character, but it's better to import a character who finished
Baldur's Gate. The plot includes a lot of references to characters and
events from Baldur's Gate; five of the characters who can join your
party in Baldur's Gate are in BG2 as well.

Then Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal. It's an expansion for BG2.
Unlike Tales of the Sword Coast, it does add to the storyline, adding
three more chapters to the game, as well as making changes to the ruleset.

You might have an easier time finding Baldur's Gate: The Original Saga.
That comes with both BG1 and the TotSC expansion.

Yes. DSotSC was enhanced and improved as Northern Tales of the Sword
Coast ... but it was in Polish. I'm still looking for a finished
English translation to give it a whirl ...

Then, to add to the confusion, I saw somewhere that DSotSC had been
re-written for WeiDU/Tutu compatibility, so I thought I might give that
a try instead.

Unforch these were both after I finished BG1/TotSC, so I've not tried
either yet.
