I somehow managed to win yesterday's 8 player tournament at Your Move
Games, run by Ben Peal in Jozxqk's absence. I had been planning on
playing a deck built around Iniko the Black Lion, but I left the crypt
at home in Vermont and had to dig through the rest of the decks I had
brought. The deck I ended up playing was the only one that hadn't
recently been mangled in some way to build something else. I had never
played it before the tournament, and given some of the problems in its
initial design, I'm quite surprised I managed to do as well as I did.

In the end, the final table went to time. I was 2nd seed, Ben Peal was
1st. The seating order was:

John Eno playing Tremere and !Tremere-->
Ben Peal playing Imbued with some vampires-->
Me playing the deck below-->
DJ *last name here* playing !Brujah rush/bleed--->
John Scherer playing Tzimisce intercept combat

Ben was unreasonably targeted with a whole lot of table hate, since he
was playing Imbued and was, you know, Ben. This left me in a good
position to just go forward and oust DJ without too much trouble. I
was really close to getting through John, but I just stopped drawing
stealth, and my combats with the Tzimisce took their toll on both of
us. When the game timed out it seemed fairly likely that Ben would
have swept up the remaining 4 vp if the game were even 20 minutes
longer. In fact, I would have been ousted by Dragonbound at the end of
my own final turn, but I managed to call a Con Boon for 6. At that
point it was up to the Johns' titled vampires to decide whether I won
the tournament or Ben did, and John Eno's votes tipped it to me. For
the record, I'm not super proud of winning this way, and I *still* have
substantial objections to the way time limits are implemented. Anyhow,
here's the deck.

Congratulations CthuluKitty!

John, thanks for representing Tremere. Do you have a decklist or any
interesting tech to share? You can email me at dorrinal.RemoveThis@hotmail.com if
you want to keep secret tech, well, secret.

Oh, yeah, go Jesse! And with a solid, old school Nosferatu deck, too!
Go Team Us! But why the single Telepathic Counter? I mean, like, yeah,
ok, save yourself 2 pool, but why not a single Telepathic Misdirection
instead?

Righto. I do remember him being referred to as such, and I took note
of it because that's the name of a particularly controversial
anthropologist I've read. I think I can edit the post in Google's
archive. I'll see about that some other time, since right now I'm
heinously tired and I'm sweating my own body weight every hour.

Good to know. Team Ithaca seems to like to rock it potence style,
though in DJ's case it may not be your fault.

Well. The deck was built based on numbers from a vaguely similar
Assamite deck I had played successfully, and then I built the deck
straight out of the box (rather than on ARDB or a sheet of paper). A
lot of the results look really weird in retrospect. Like, 1 Blood
Doll???? So my exact motivations may be unclear on this matter.

I think the reasons for Counter over Misdirection are that Counter is
actually more effective bleed defense (barring mega-bleeds, which I
neither expected nor really encountered), but less effective generally
in that it doesn't double as offense. Since the card is free and
doesn't tap the reacting minion, it just works out to be a more
efficient way to cut down on counter loss. My vampires were running on
ridiculously low blood the whole day, so that aspect of the decision
seems to have been correct. And given the overall structure of the
deck, efficient defense was more important for my few reaction cards
than additional offense, which is well covered by the CHUD swarm.
Another relevant point is that Regilio can play Telepathic Counter to
reasonably good effect, whereas paying a blood for intercept is kinda
bad. Since Regilio is 1 of only 3 crypt cards with any amount of
auspex, that part of the evaluation is pretty important.

Nah, my decklists aren't secret. It wouldn't make too much sense to
keep garbage secret anyway. Wink

Crafted with : Anarch Revolt Deck Builder. [Sat Jul 15 10:09:29 2006]

I've been working on this and playing it a bunch - it's actually a
slightly tweaked version of what I played at the NERQ, and I'd built it
a while before that. At this point, I feel like I either need to go all
bruise/bleed with it or make it even more wallish - preying on Mr.
Peal's imbued was very frustrating, as there was really nothing I could
do to go forward once he had a dork out with an Ivory Bow.

I'm more likely to make it a wall deck, given my preferred playstyle,
so here are the changes I'll likely make if I play it again:

-1 Rumor Mill (was intended to be used as intercept to give out, but
the only time I ever tapped it was for my own guys)
-1 Dreams of the Sphinx (not really necessary if the deck is more
focused)
+1 KRCG
+1 Smiling Jack

-1 Magic of the Smith (between 3 MotS and one Bowl, I'll probably see
the Bowl early, and that's normally what I dig for first)

-2 Conditioning
-3 Seduction

+2 Wind Dance
+2 Soul Burn

+1 Neighborhood Watch Commander

+2 Precognition

-1 Charnas the Imp (he's great, but he kept coming back to bite me in
the ass)

Yeah, you can't blame Peter for that one. Except maybe by osmosis from
hearing about his Nos while I was out there...

For some reason, my cards sat in a box all while I was in Ithaca, and I
never got going on playing again after about '96 or so till I migrated
to Boston and ended up sharing an apartment with a VTES player.

At which point I really rather regretted giving my cards away before I
left Ithaca since I figured I hadn't played 'em while I was there...

Mostly I'd blame that deck on the fighty Boston metagame, and the fact
that everything else I had was mid-tuning and I knew how that one
flowed.

In any case, fun tournament, and congrats, Jesse, on the win -
range-flexible combat was a good call on your part.
